Can we get a transfer cost thread going?

Just know if you use Lake Norman Pawn to transfer a stripped lower it is their policy to require a pistol purchase permit or a CCW.

Anyone know what Beltway Gun and Pawn in Mathews charges for a transfer nowadays?

Lucky to have a range member that has an FFL and charges nothing. Might be worth one member in each area getting one (I’m sure local members would throw in for the fees?) and transfer for cheap or nothing. Just a thought!

The LGS here charges 40 now. No way. For signing a piece of paper?

I think Tarheel State in Mathews is $30 and he supports the forum.
I actually prefer THSF but this website only had Beltway listed for transfers and adding one to their website could take up to 2 weeks. (Sportsmans Warehouse). I didn't want to wait that long. I finally got a hold of someone at Beltway and he asked where it was coming from (guess it matters) and he said $30. We'll give it a shot.

For anyone else who has used them, Bradshaw Firearms Sales in Salisbury for transfers, he’s closing up shop. He charged $10 for years. Both of my $10 guys have retired in the past year. Rough days, friends.

There is a lot more to a transfer than signing a piece of paper.

Please tell me what else is involved. Not trying to be rude. I usually fill out 90% of a form, they fill out the rest and that’s all I know. Doesn’t seem like 40 bucks worth of work.

The biggest thing that non-FFLs don't understand is that the receiving FFL is on the hook for 20 years in case a trace is run on that gun. You have to respond to the trace request in 24 hours with the requested info. I know an FFL who had to drive five hours home from vacationing with his family to respond to a trace request because it was "too urgent" to wait until he was back from vacation. In cases like that, there is no price a transfer fee is worth dealing with the headache.

Aside from that....

You have to receive the gun from the shipper, which can be very easy, or may eat up tons of your time if you have a stealth Fedex driver like we do. I once had to drive 45 minutes to a terminal to pick up a transfer gun before it was shipped back to the sender after three delivery attempts where I was there but the driver just slapped a door tag on the door and headed out. Guess who lost money on that transfer?

You have the overhead of maintaining your FFL premises, plus the myriad hours you spend in compliance to keep the FFL. Like it or not, the FFL is doing something you probably don't want to do so that he can legally transfer that gun to you. I've never known anyone who complained about transfer fees who would put up with the crap and put in the hours we do to get and keep their own FFL.

On top of all that, the transferred gun very well may be competing with that FFL's in-store inventory. Some dealers have high transfer fees to combat that to some extent.

Is it worth $40? $10? $100? You get to decide that on the paying side and your transfer dealer gets to decide that on the charging side, but I can tell you from experience that we do a whole lot more than sign a piece of paper for whatever we charge for a transfer.

wow. Sounds awful! Thanks for the insight. I would not want to deal with that either

Don't get me wrong - I don't blame you for not wanting to pay $40 for a transfer. But, having an FFL and doing transfers isn't as simple and easy as some might think. I get why some dealers charge outlandish prices for transfers. I also get that people have a threshold on what they will pay. The market meets somewhere in there and people get their transfers done by dealers who want to do them. :)

Yeah for sure. Makes me grateful to know a dude. And now I appreciate him even more. Guess he deserves a bottle of something!

I said it in another thread but once I traded a homemade pizza for a transfer. Normally I pay $15 @ Flip Flop Firearms in Bostic, NC.

Cubrock, how about the liability of keeping the gun in the safe until the buyer decides to come and pick it up? Or there is something wrong with the gun and the buyer wants you to ship it back. Or when the buyer gets turned down on the background check, having to go through the PIA of entering it in your A&D books twice and waiting for a shipping label to send it back.

Or the firearm arrives at the FFL but the seller didn’t include the proper documents (drivers license or FFL, as appropriate).

Good points, all. I was going off the top of my head when I had a minute to reply. Glad you chimed in.

That happens all the time. And the sellers, who already have their money, often won't respond to requests for the documentation.

I need a reliable place that is on file with PSA near Richfield NC that is not full of crazy and insanely expensive. I have been using Leadchunkers in Rockwell NC for 20.00, but PSA does not list them anymore.

T-Town Pawn in Troutman is $15... they recently changed ownership and fixed the place up. Nice people and id like to send more business their way.

For you Lake Norman area folks.

On the slightly higher end, just picked up a FFL transfer at Watchdog Tactical off Old Statesville in north Charlotte, cost was $40 + taxes Hadn’t used them before, neighbor mentioned them and they’re pretty close to my house and were on the PSA drop down list.

Anyone know who offers cheap transfers around Davidson county?
The last thing I heard someone say was Atlas Firearms in the edge of Winston Salem. That's like Ebert drive area. I heard it was about $20 and I know that's still not great but better than a lot of places around here. May give them a call.

IIRC, Countryside Gunsmiths (between High Point and Wallburg) now charges $30.

I was trying to find something under $30. Seems like everyone around is charging between $30-35. I see some folks posting prices between $5-15 in some areas, I was checking if we have something like that close by. I drive through cabarrus county daily, that works too.

I just arranged for a transfer to RAD Industries in Graham N.C. They are charging me $25. Rudy , one of the owners, is extremely helpful and personable. I'm not a regular there . Only did business with them once before on another transfer and they treated me great right from the start.
