Just as an aside, I don't see the utility of a red dot as a self defense pistol accessory.

From the pics it looks to be headed towards the neck. The diaphragm nerve exits between C5 and C6. I was figuring C6, 7, or 8. Possibly as low as T1. In that area, with a SD round, you could do enough damage and shock to cut, damage, or shut down breathing instantly. If it actually severed that nerve it's over before you hit the ground. You just have a few seconds to realize it. But that's all conjecture based on some medical training. Any damage to the C spine is potentially life threatening. If you severe the spinal cord above 5 you are DRT because you severe the diaphragm nerve. C6 or lower and you stand a chance to live with other serious issues you have to survive.

I would think one might be distracted by trying to line up the dot during a time of stress, when "point shooting" is all one has time for.
Of course in this instance, that might have been wise for both parties involved, but not the case in all situations I think.

With a proper draw and presentation, you don't have to "chase" the dot.
It's really the same thing as a red dot on a rifle. If you're pointed in the right direction and your eye is close to where it needs to be, you'll see the dot. If you're not all lined up, you won't. It has limitations, but inside those limitations it's a major boost.
All the rmr does is give you a little bit more room to be out of alignment and still get a shot on target, and it gives you a single parallax-free point to put on target instead of a 2 rears, a front, and then a target for standard sights. YOU still have to run the gun. Once you get the feel of one, it's awesome.

When I looked at the published Denver sequence, what I noted was the shooters post shoot actions. Maintained the gun pointed at downed victim while advancing and then side stepping. Only lowering gun after seeing LE approaching. So much for any kind of accident defense.

That was me... I figured if the slide was in recoil, and the victim was not yet hit, then the bullet was somewhere in between, and close to impact. Found it just about to hit right under his chin.
Did anyone notice that the bullet is visible, just prior to hitting the victim in the throat?
You can see the shock wave, turbulence with the fence post behind it, and the bullet at the apex of the wedge of the wave.
Musta severed his spine, just below his head.
