Thought I would share this - I'll try to keep this short: I just found out that an acquaintance of our family had their home broken in to a week or so ago. The mom and son were the only ones at home. Mom leaves to go run errands and leaves the son home alone because he's sick. As mom is pulling out of the drive, she notices a car parked across the road at a vacant home. She gets a mile down the road and starts getting a bad feeling. She calls the son to tell him about the car and to make sure the door is locked. As the son is going to check the door, he screams to his mom (he still has her on the phone) that the car is backing into their carport. Mom tells him to go hide and then hangs up to call their neighbor. She also turns around to head back home. At that point, an individual kicks in the door and starts ransacking the house. The perp goes through about every room tossing drawers (except, thankfully, the room the son is hiding in). Shortly thereafter, mom pulls back in the drive and starts laying on the horn. The inside perp hears this, runs and jumps back into the car (their was a second perp who stayed in the car the whole time). The driver then floors the car in reverse, sideswipes the mom's car while backing out, and they leave.
Long story short, everyone is fine other than the property damage, some items were stolen, and the emotional distress. What struck me the most was that this all happened in less than 5 minutes from the time mom left till she got back. It's one thing to hear things like this in the news, but puts it in a whole different perspective when it happens to someone you know. It also shows how quickly life can take a turn for the worse. Stay safe.
