Interesting problem at Cherokee Guns in Murphy, NC

A few years ago, I was at the Fayetteville gun show looking for a .357 revolver. Overheard a fellow trying to sell an unfired stainless GP100 for $400 asking price to a vendor. Vendor offered him $250! I offered him $350, and still have the revolver. Vendor got all pissed off, but I told him: that’s what happens when you try to screw people. Have a nice day!

Did you wait for him to leave the vendor’s table, or cut into their active negotiations?

No, didn't and wouldn't cut in. The gentleman had already turned down the lowball offer.

I didn't think you would, but figured I'd clarify before responding further. The dealer had no gripe, then, and you got a great gun at a great price. Love me some GP-100s!

I've had people cut in while I was in the middle of negotiating. That is extremely poor form.

I was looking at very overpriced S&W 586 at the vendors table when the gentleman with the GP100 arrived.
Vendor immediately lowballed him at $250, and the gentleman turned him down. Vendor turned and walked away, so I figured the negotiations were over. I asked the GP owner if he’d sell to me, offered him $350, and showed him my CCP- Done deal.

Vendor then accused me of stealing a sale, and got all huffy. I asked him if he generally turned his back and walked away from paying customers? Then told him that’s what you get for trying to screw people over.

LOL. If he walked away, then that is on him. I personally would have asked the seller to step away from the table with me, but the vendor did walk away. He might have been trying to play a game with the guy, but he paid for it by losing the deal.

That was a few years ago when S&W re-introduced the 586, and this vendor wanted $700 for it. I walked away smiling with a new stainless GP for half of the price of the 586, win/win. It’s still my favorite handgun.

I was at a gun show in Raleigh about 30 years ago, looking to trade a Ruger speed six in 357 for a super single six 22/22mag. Everybody had the super single six, nobody wanted to trade, until I got t one of the last tables. Gun shop owner explained the super single six was on consignment and he could not trade it to me even though the owner wanted a short barreled 357 as I did not have a purchase permit. But the owner of the 22 was helping him that day and it we wanted to "go over there and trade" it was on us. I have been back to his shop several times.

My LGS would have a fit if I did such inside their Store and I wouldn't blame them, same with their parking lot if they knew it. ;)

If they only knew how many used gun transactions that have likely taken place there.

Gun stores: where a great many people meet in the parking lot to sell each other stuff.

I bought a Colt SAA several years ago and left the dealers table to go get the money. When I came back there was a man trying to buy the gun and up and offered $200 more than we made the deal for. I stood back silently watching. This went on for a minute or so with the dealer telling him 3 or 4 times" no ". The man steamed off. I paid the dealer and over the years have bought several more guns from him. I liked his way of doin biddness.

I worked in a pawn and gun many years ago before social media. We had this happen sometimes, people lurking around outside - we usually handled it in a more quiet and effective manner. One guy even was a customer and tried to buy a gun off someone coming inside. When he did present his pawn ticket to pick up his stuff the ticket got lost. Sorry but yo cannot pick up your stuff without a ticket. This guy called the police- the cops just laughed at him.
