Post your favorite grain free dog food. Have been using 4Health Beef and Potato for a long time with no ill affects.

I've used Fromm's for years but I don't use their grain free line.

I switched my dogs to purina pro sensitive this week which is grain free and made with salmon and rice. The first couple days was constant farting, like loud farts. But things have calmed down with them and now it's just the silent but deadly variety farts.

Honest Kitchen dehydrated. It’s dry in the box and you rehydrate before feeding. Also not grain free as our vet advises against that.

One of our dogs has a protein allergy, so we get her the salmon and pea dry dog food from Members Mark at Sam’s Club. It’s grain-free and both of our dogs love it. Peanut, who used to sometimes skip a meal and seemed kind of disinterested in her food, now gobbles up this food. She races to her bowl every meal.

Funny that's the same with our dogs they love the salmon food. I have heard that the southern states brand is really high quality and only 38.99 for 30lbs.

This one is $29.98 for 30 lbs. Not sure of the quality, but since the dogs seem to love it, I plan to stick to with it.

Used to feed ACANA grain free but have moved away from it due to the increase in canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) somewhat linked to grain free diets. Also I believe more and more these days that the grain free trend is a money grab. Most of the the Vets I know some who are personal friends do not recommend a grain free diet. They don't see any benefit. So we now use Purina Pro Plan low protein diets. One of my Boykins had a bout of pancreatitis so low protein helps control it.

We’ve been feeding our dogs Pet Pantry food for about 10 years now - usually their salmon variety. Small local company (Apex), good product and outstanding service. They even deliver around the triangle for free (unfortunately we are a bit too far out now).

Orijen is the best. But I hate to mention it because the tightwads will stress out again.

Same, every flavor except the salmon because it makes her breath drink lol

Old Roy is probably about the worst do

I tried Orijen when my dog was a pup and it made her break out in a rash on her stomach. Seems like a good food, just doesn't get along with my dog.

We were feeding iams, then purina now we’re on 4health. We use the large breed variety for our English mastiff. My wife works at tractor supply and with her discount the 4health is a little cheaper for the amount we go through. The dogs haven’t had any issue with any thing we feed them and their coats have a nice shine with the 4health.

We've been feeding our dog Taste of the Wild grain-free since she was a pup... Change the flavors around so she doesn't get bored and gets varied protein and veggies. She loves the stuff.

We've used 4Health Performance for ~10yrs without any issues for both Rotties. I'm more concerned about corn than any grains, if it's in the first 3 ingredients, it's out. They're not made to process corn and it works like a laxative so they have messier craps and need more food.
We're using something from Chewies for convenience reasons more than anything else, the nearest Tractor Supply's 25-30 min away.

We have swapped between Nutro and TOTW.
I'm beginning to think its all made in the same factory and rebranded.
I would pour some milk on it and chow down if it was all I had.

I wouldn't be surprised. The canned stuff is probably healthier than a lot of the crap I eat, lol... The duck & sweet potato one she gets, smells great and looks like something I could eat in a pinch...

Also not grain free as our vet advises against that.
Any particular reason?

I know a common one was potential for heart disease due to a low level of Taurine.

We’ve been feeding ours Fromm’s grain free, and one of the reasons we chose it was it has Taurine added. The good thing about having a 11-12 pound dog is it doesn’t really matter how expensive the food is. We buy the 12lb bags (currently $35-$40 depending on flavor) and get 2-3 months out of them. Bought the first bag 5/11/19, and she emptied the 3rd bag yesterday. So ~8 months to finish off three 12lb bags.

We did Surf & Turf for the first two, Salmon on the third, and she’s enjoying Game Bird for this one. We’ll skip the chicken one, but rotate through most of the others to give her a little variety and prepare her digestive system in case they stop using a certain protein.

We’ve really like the PetPeople store near us for a healthier food selection.

I used to feed mine the grain free Fromm exclusively. I still buy a grain free bag occasionally but mainly rotate between the chicken, duck and whitefish. Those are the 3 that my dogs seem to like the most.

I've been studying this stuff since I made the original post. Even though my vet says grain free isn't good for them she admits that there isn't much proof or large studies that they need the grain free. I have talked to a lot of vets, rescue people and others and they say that the problems with certain grains can be just as bad as the grain free. Now I'm mixing a little regular 4Health with the grain free.

Not grain free, but we have used Nutro for 13 years or so. Our past dog had joint issues and Nutro senior food had glucosamine....it seemed to help her with her joints.

My friend who is a vet says that there are 2 factors why she does not recommend grain free foods. First is the Taurine deficiency leading to heart disease. This is not been 100% born out but prior to the mass introduction of grain free foods this was a non-issue outside of a particular set of breeds. It is now the common link to these cases outside of the known breed set.

The second reason is that there are no studies that show the benefits of of a grain free diet for dogs. There is a small set of dogs that are allergic to some grains like corn. If your dog is allergic to certain grain it makes sense to move them to a food without that grain but it is not necessary for dogs in general. A good analogy is that some people are gluten intolerant but that does not mean all human beings should stop eating gluten.

Her take is that it is a money grab. It is a way to exploit dog parents need to feed their dogs "the best" food possible and they use marketing and junk science to convince people that grain free and more exotic ingredients are a more natural food for your evolved domesticated dog. They don't do extensive testing on the foods and their digestive health effects. I hate to say it but the larger companies have been studying/researching animal nutrition for decades and go above and beyond the AAFCO standards for animal nutritional testing.

That’s one thing that will likely never happen. That’s one thing I have control over and have planned for for years. :D
That's what I said too. Then life happened.

An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!

I blend his kibble with good chicken broth, fresh peas, and carrots to soften it up a bit for him (see below). And he gets soft boiled eggs on the weekend.

He is dying of jaw/mouth cancer, so he also gets a few other meds and supplements with his food every day. He's still happy, which makes me happy, and he eats like a damned king. When it's time to say goodbye here before long, I'll switch his food over to bacon cheeseburgers.
