Winter weather??

Only time my well froze was about 30 yrs ago when we got down to 0 and the bulb I had under the well cover had burned out and I didn't know it. It was the pipe from the top of the well to the house that froze and a few minutes with a hair dryer had it running it again. I put one of the domed chick lights under the cover yesterday with a 100 w bulb and then the power was out this morning, but nothing froze.

Problem now is trying to find decent 60 or 100 watt incandescent light bulbs. LED bulbs are useless.
It is totally my fault it froze. I never lifted the insulation rock over the well head to see how it was protected. I found out today it is not protected very well. And there is no outlet up there either. Both problems will be corrected very soon. @Windini is on his way here with some stuff to help me get it thawed. I've got enough insulation to do a temp job for now.

Chicken coop heat bulbs?

Kudo’s to @Windini for representing CFF’s disaster relief crew today.

I might have a few. Remind me before the next lunch and I'll bring you some.

I had the red heat bulbs, but they are 250 w. I didn't want to boil the water before it comes in the house. 🤣

I figured it might get too hot. A 60-100 w bulb puts off enough heat to keep things from freezing.

My wife is getting updates from her friends in Buffalo, there is a municipal state of emergency, all services are shut down, including emergency services. Emergency vehicles are unable to drive because of the volume of snow and the wind. They attribute two at-home deaths to the event, there was an emergency baby delivery in a home, and a woman whose baby is on a ventilator had to be manually ventilated throughout the night because they did not have power and could not get to the hospital.

They are saying that the snow is piling faster than it can be plowed, and said it could be another 24 hours before emergency vehicles could leave their stations.

Well this morning a little after 6:00 A.M. power went out for us in Greensboro. Went to get generator from building. Problems started. Riding mower wouldn't start. Pulled it out. Then generator wouldn't start too cold I guess. Wife said heat it up, so we loaded 260 pounds in back of subaru with heat full blast. After 15 minutes fired right up.and been running ever sense. So blessed and thankful generator worked. If been a heck of last week. Last Thursday / Friday i was treated for the flu. Nope.was covid. I isolated then little man got it and wife. Little man had croup , bronchitis, and covid. We are so much better.

I see where Duke Energy is doing rolling black outs. What we need is more electric cars to plug in .

Merry Christmas to each member and their families.

Yea one of our clients there had staff and customers sleep in a couple of their stores last night. So far the event is on track as forecast. As mentioned yesterday, they had zero vis and gusts around 60 from around 9am through late last night and its only very slightly better today. The band has been north of the city for most of the day but it is coming back south into the city this afternoon for round 2 and then south into the Southtowns tonight.

My 6 am home from work project. Insulated garage doors. Just got back from Home Depot and put new weather stripping on the interior garage door and back door.

Currently 30 degrees outside and 50 in the garage with a radiator heater and a Mr Buddy heater.

Sold a generator this morning. Said he could come at 10:30 or later. Told him he better come now I have almost 20 messaged from 7-8:30am. Had a bunch of low ballers offer half price early in the week. Haha. They offered full price today. Nope, screw you. Went on to first guy who had not made an offer. Merry Christmas no power jerks.

When you get this heat pump cut some ducts into there. More than enough capacity. This is no ordinary heat pump. It will heat down to 0°, actually lower. You can close them off with a damper ro a dampened supply grill.

That looks good. What product did you buy for this? Is the insulation a certain size or thickness? I should have done this to the 2 garage doors in our basement a long time ago.

Ok water is back on. It kinda fixed itself. Got upto about 20* and some direct sunlight got it flowing again. Got a temp insulation job on it to hopefully get me through to the summer to fix it proper

Dang. Yeah I need to look into that.

Measure the panels. I had to get the larger size. But they make a kit with pre cut panels for smaller doors. One bag did my double garage door with some extra of cuts left over. I’ll go back and tie the panel in later.

Pet store.. ceramic IR heater used for reptiles. Screws into a bulb socket

Splendid idea! Thanks.

I might buy several and then try the "well, dear, since I've got these extra heating units I might as well buy a ball python so that they don't go to waste" gambit.

Of course, I'll likely end up spending the night out in the well head along with the heater instead.

They work well and are said to be less of a fire hazard than a heat lamp.

Good plan with the ball. I’ve toyed with getting another python for years, last I had was a Burmese. A ball would be my next if I did, I don’t need another Burmese.

Another option to consider is running an automotive 12V, 100W incandescent off a battery. If you have a charger for the battery, you wouldn't have to run a generator there all the time just to have the small heat source, or have to run long cords to carry 120V AC fro wherever the genx is.

Well, thanks, but @heavydoc & Mama Nature fixed it before I got there!

I just repped CFF's Delivery Crew today. :)

Hate to hear some of y'all's stories though. Christmas Eve is supposed to be a day off from adventures.

Insulating my garage door has been on my project list for a while. I'll get it done probably after the holidays.

I don't know what the temp in the garage was last night / today but there's a water bottle out there that never froze. Water bottle in my truck sitting outside the garage froze solid. Garage is attached to the house. High today in my area never got above 30.

.

Give that water bottle in the garage a shake and see if it flash freezes.

our power company decided to do 30 minute blackout 12/24 morning. as in the coldest point of the whole system. unsure why they chose the coldest point and I hope they get some hate for it. i flickered on and off for a few hours, was up all night just to keep an eye on it all.

today seemed downright tropical and I'm sure glad it's behind us now

Have a couple of water bottles on the carport thst didn’t freeze. Odd info in terms of micro climate. Took water to the chickens twice today, both froze.

Peak heat pump demand.

most people here are on fuel oil or wood heat, a lot of straight a/c units and a good deal of heat pumps have propane furnaces to click on sub 40. it was -7 this morning and a garbage decision to test demand

edit to say seems a slippery slope for a power co, maybe under governor ol' roy cooper's emergency declaration (if that was in effect) to throttle your service anytime?

Thank god my power stayed on, feel really bad for the folks who went dark. Last thing I'd wanted to do is look for a place to warm up with a 8 month old puppy and a 16.5 year old grannie dog.

You are going to just like I do- forget about it till next winter when it happens again, lol

you in osage orange country yeah? hear it's a btu champ
Yeah, but… farmers here hate them. Thorns are hell on tractor tires & they get cut into fence posts or burnt right away. Ton of hickory though, which ain’t terrible far behind it.

I have never understood this logic...our folks are freezing, why don't we cut off their power and see if that helps???
