2023 Weight Loss Thread!

Well today ended up being cheat day. Had two small potatoes with a little cheese and bacon for lunch. Skipped the afternoon snack I'm supposed to have. Then we hooked up with friends for dinner and things got ugly. I had an old fashioned, a glass of white table wine and a whole 14" pizza (except the outer crust). Oops.
We had planned to get Thai, but the friends brought the daughter with so Thai veggies got nixed for pizza.

Try cauliflower crust pizza, i was pleasantly surprised

Wife wanted Chinese - for the first time in as many years as I can remember, I ordered the chicken and broccoli with no rice and fried dumplings. I feel like part of me has died inside, given how much I love pork fried dumplings.

My wife ordered sushi tonight. I had a small cup of chicken fried rice. Life happens. Tomorrow we're having salmon, so back to the grind.

Just did a few miles hiking around Anne Springs tonight, so I feel like I've at least worked off some of the corn starch and any sugar they'll have added.

I dont dare walk by the chinese place in the mall, orange chicken is the devil

I've stalled at the 238 mark +- a pound in water weight daily. Calorie count is still low, so hoping it kicks back into gear soon. I haven't been able to hike as much, so that's probably factoring in.

If you stall, pay attention to your calories. Sometimes we want to go even lower but that just puts the body in a survival mode which will retain the weight.

Try some HIIT exercises to spark your metabolism, something like two sets of 10 burpees followed by two sets of squats followed by two sets of push-ups, all back to back-to-back with no rest. Do that twice a day, or find a couple local driveways that are 100 yd apart and just run some sprints.

I dropped from 233 to 165 over the past two years. Little bit each week, each month. Stopped eating junk food except for special occasions, exercising some but not a ton - elliptical for cardio (bad knees so running is tough) and walking our neighborhood trails, some weights 2-3 times per week but focused on doing whole body type exercises. Stopped eating food after 7pm. Feel so much healthier, no more sore back in the mornings. Can run around with kids and play with them. My motivation, didn’t want to die before they left the house.

Cheat days are fine and needed. Gives you a mental win, satisfaction. Life sucks if you deprive yourself of the things you enjoy. The key is moderation and not gluttony. One thing someone said to me when I realized I needed to lose weight and be healthier…don’t weigh yourself every day. Check yourself once or twice a week at most. Your weight will fluctuate up and down a few pounds every day and if you obsess over those ups, it will kill your motivation. Drink more water one day, your weight will go up. Don’t shit on the same schedule when you weigh yourself, weight will go up. Same person told me to actually plan a cheat day each week, give yourself a reward but don’t over due it. If you do, ramp up the calorie burn over the next week and it won’t derail you. Keep the faith, this is the way.

I would say, especially as we age, don't have 'cheat days,' but rather 'treat meals.' An entire day can throw you off since your metabolism and testosterone go down over the years. If you do choose to take an entire day, just be conscientious on the couple days before and after to skim some calories.

RE: weighing, this is true. Once a week is sufficient, and water weight, humidity, a dozen other things can make it fluctuate. Even time of day and the surface upon which you put your scale.

When I retired, I stopped having access to a hot breakfast (eggs bacon, hash browns, etc) in the morning and fewer fast food lunches.

By doing nothing else other than not having these every day, I lost 20 lbs in 6 months and it's stayed off. I'm 6'2" and 185 and probably am about "right sized" at this point. When I smoked (30 yrs ago and a *lot* ) I never weighed more than 165.

That said, I sure miss those fry cook to order breakfasts

Funny... I started eating breakfasts to lose weight. Before I was skipping it then carb loading to get through the day. Then I would eat a huge dinner and do nothing after. By moving the big meal to the beginning of the day all sorts of good stuff happened.

I'm eating like 6 times a day, but keeping it to about 150-200 calories per interval. This keeps you just a little hungry all day, but never really ravenous. It's easy to do since I'm home. My wife is doing the same thing, but she's having a hard time since she's in the office and gets stuck on calls/in meetings where she can't slip off to the lunch room for an apple break.

I used to go to a Brazilian restaurant that served yucca fries. They were pretty good.

220.5 stall this week. I'm thinking it was less stall than it was birthday cake. Wife turned the odometer to 47 on Tuesday and that came alongside cajun seafood pasta and key lime birthday cake. This is a hard time of year for me because the calendar is absoltely littered with holidays and birthdays.

From Halloween to New Year's our extended family has five (I think) birthdays, plus my anniversary, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. I get it.

If you stay stalled, try a day or two of IF to switch up your metabolism and throw some HIIT in.

I started at 187.2 lbs 2 weeks ago and am down to 181.4 this morning. 5’ 6” so way heavier than I need to be. Trying to loose 25 lbs. The last thing I want is to have a stroke or issues later on in life and not be here for my little girl.

I’ve started packing my lunch each day and weighing my food to the gram. I am on the road all week between 1000-1500 miles - it’s REALLY easy to grab Bojangles for breakfast and some other crap for lunch. So far preplanning and having snacks that aren’t awful for me really help me keep myself on track. Have started tracking everything through Lose it!.

I knew I was eating to much but good lord I was eating about 3-4 servings each time I ate anything.

What all lower calorie snacks/meals are you all eating? I’m trying to stay between 1700-1800/ day calories for the next few months.

I’ve been packing the carb smart tortillas with ham/cheeses/mayo/lettuce. Can keep those around 330 calories each. Been eating lots of those mini cucumbers sliced up, carrots, black berries, homemade beef jerky, Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast. Egg white etc.

Other thing that’s helping is not eating all
hours of the day. I typically eat from 10-6 or 10-7. Nothing before or after. I don’t seem to be as hungry all day like I was a few weeks ago. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My weight is more/less consistent, but I am back down to around 180, so a loss of about 2, 3 pounds. We had our son's graduation party on Saturday, then with Father's Day following, we'll see how the needle moves.

Back on track, down to 236.6.

Struggling with cramping and gas pains this week now that I’m on the full dose of Victoza. My appetite had picked back up for a bit on the medium dosage, and I’m hoping that’s not the case on the max dose.

i figured i would jump in on this thread....weighed 255 in 2018...got down to 205 by late 2019 and ran a couple of triathlons and a half marathon....keep it off during the first part of covid but had a kid in late 2021 and i eat when im tired or stressed....so now im at 237 and have buckled back down on Intermittent fasting....16/8 will increase my workouts...was running 3 miles 3 times a week and swimming 3 days a week. I dont have time for that any more but my goal is 2 miles twice a week and a longer run on the weekend and then at least 20 mins of HIIT the other 3 days....wish me luck

I’ll jump in. I’m not a big guy at 5’8”, but I had started packing on the pounds since I took a desk job. I was up to nearly 200lbs which is too much for my frame.

I signed up for The Gun Run 5k biathlon at @VOD Tactical late last year and I didn’t want to suck so I got my ass off the couch and started “running”. The first few times out I couldn’t jog for 2 minutes without stopping. After about 6 weeks of training, I did OK at my first Gun Run. I was injured for the second one, unfortunately. Now I’m running about 9 or 10 miles a week and getting better every week.

Then I figured out if I didn’t eat garbage, I could run faster. So I stopped eating garbage and now I run faster.

Then I figured out that if I quit binge drinking on the weekends, I could run faster. So I have basically quit drinking and now I run faster and feel a hell of a lot better. My mind is clearer, no hangovers, more energy, and my wallet is thanking me. I’m not a teetotaler, but I may have come to realize I’m one of those “1 beer is too many and 100 beers is not enough” kind of guys.

I’m down to 177lbs as of today and I’m thinking I want to level off around 160. I guess the napkin math is pretty simple. I’m burning around 4,000 calories a month running and I quit drinking about 10,000 calories in beer a month.

I haven't posted in a while, I lost 30 then got relax and put 8 back on. All with diet, I just got a peloton and did my first ride last night. It was pretty motivating even though I about died. About to do another ride tonight, maybe this will be something that motivates me to be more active. Also signed up for a mud run in October, dont want to suck at that so need to get going.

A few months away from being 75 years old. 5'8" 220 lbs
Bad back both knees shot to hell . Had shots in them 4 months ago bno help there . Cut back on bread and sweets lost 6 pounds in 6 months
Can't do exercise . Sure can't walk . But Dr said to keep up what I'm doing and a pound a month is better than nothing. Neighbor is on those shots , monjoro I think . He lost 20 pounds in six weeks. Should I be trying them? I need 30 pounds or more of this body.Would love to be less than 175 lbs.

I can't do much exercise due to my own conditions, but it's really hard to exercise yourself skinny anyway. Exercise is just part of the equation. The bigger part is how much you eat.
If you can't exercise to burn calories you need to put less food in the tank.

I've cut myself back to 1200 calories a day. I lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks. This can be done without medication. I'd sure try to not add anything that might have side effects. Also, what happens when you stop with the drug? Piling the weight back on? Learning to live on smaller portions is easier and doesn't need to result in side effects or becoming dependent upon meds to keep the weight off.

Keto will do the same as the shots and be better nutritionally as long as you eat the healthier low carb alternatives (for instance, rutabaga instead of potatoes). Lots of alternative sweeteners too.

Pretty much cut out potatoes already. French fries were my weakness. Still love hamburgers but without the buns.

I have stalled out for the past 2 weeks. I am not gaining so that is good but I would like to see a little loss weekly for the effort. I have been jogging and hiking 15- 20 miles a week and have limited my calories to around 2000. The good news is I lost about 30 pounds in 3 months before the stall. I am going to change things up a little to see if it jump starts anything.

I have to confess again. I'm getting really bored eating approved food. I ordered Thai yesterday for dinner. I feel better now about eating same old, same old today.

Try incorporating HIIT and doing a bit of IF to change things up. Sometimes just a few days of it is enough to change up your metabolism.

Meds should be last resort. Monitor calories and quality of calories. Get light dumbbells (3#, 5#) and do basic curls. Do everything before you try meds.

Bolded/italicized for bonus points.

Definitely diet alternatives before meds, though diets (any of them) work differently than meds.

Over the course of '22, I'd managed to get down to 215-220 (from 235) through portion control, (mostly) avoiding crap & not munching at night. Once Divorceapocalypse kicked off in Jan, I lost even more weight almost overnight (stress kills my appetite), but haven't had a scale to check how much & didn't particularly care.

We've been doing Home Chef 3x/week & we only do fast food maybe once every couple months. Also drink almost nothing but water or milk. A 12 pk of Lipton Iced Tea lasts me a week & we might drink a 12 pk of beer between us over the course of a month.

We've been walking between 2.5 & 4.5 miles, 5-6 times per week & when I got weighed last Tuesday, I was 205 in my cargo shorts & tank top, so maybe 202, 203 nekkid. My goal, starting out last year was to lose 30-40 lbs, so I'll definitely call that a success.

I have had to buy a whole new wardrobe, though & I need a belt to keep my 34W pants from falling off (from 36W) & all my old 2XL shirts hang off me like a tent. In fact, I'm back to the point where I can carry OWB with minimal to no printing in shorts & a tank top. Need to look into a shorter Fatboy belt too, 'cos my old size 40 is on its last notch.

So yeah, I'd say goal achieved. I honestly don't give a rat's hairy posterior about the numbers, but at 53, I feel & look better than I have in over 15 years. I'm about to join the local Y to start doing yoga & swimming & once the divorce & ensuing financial hemorrhaging is over this fall, I'll be joining a local dojo to study Okinawan kenpo, jiu jitsu & traditional weapons. Likely won't lose much, if any weight, but I'll be fitter than I've been since I was on active duty & won't be destroying what's left of my joints in the process.

Amazing what healthy diet & exercise can accomplish. Lol!
