2023 Weight Loss Thread!

52 years old, 6 foot 205 to 170. No diet, just a LOT of cycling. Started taking it serious in November. Now in with the faster groups. Still a ways to go in conditioning, but those 4000 calorie days will melt the fat off. And that spandex is a stong motivator ;)

still plugging away, sidetracked on our summer trips (hard to maintain keto while camping/on vacation), but right back at it once i got home. hovering on the brink of breaking into the 170s

My diet this past weekend in Atlanta was atrocious. The only green thing I ate was guacamole. Time to clamp it down.
That's right mister. Guacamole is disgusting. Just say no to green food.

Joking aside, I need to get back to it. I'm making chicken breast with Adobo sauce and serving on shredded lettuce and cabbage fir dinner.

i've tried eating avocado (its very healthy and a great addition to keto), but i just cant get over the flavor...bleh

i do use the oil in place of vegetable/canola though

Same. The talk about putting it on toast like it's some kind of delicacy just makes me insane. And it's frequently used to ruin sushi.

Spice it up; salt pairs nicely. I also use a Mexican adobo seasoning,

I use a couple of these products:

If I may suggest something as a possible meal replacement for the weightloss folks, and a post workout filler for the folks lifting.

Clear Whey isolate powders with water. I've switched to it from normal whey concentrate with milk, mixed with cleaner eating, I'm since down 8lbs of unwanted weight while working on my displacement of stubborn fat with muscle, while still enjoying the occasional hard beverage.

I've been 'skinny-fat' for the past 2/3 years at 6'0" hovered between 190-180 and seeing this stuff work in conjunction with exercise and other protine & calorie sources. Currently I'm scaling in the 175 region at morning weigh in's.

It's not the most filling experience, low calorie, 20g protine per-scoop, minimal fortitude, but I haven't been a fan of the bloating after a traditional whey and milk shake. Opting for fruit flavors like strawberry lemon and mango peach with water has been working great making it through hot months where I couldn't stomach milk & vanilla/chocolate flavors mid day, but needed the protein coming in.

If you're interested in it, I'd encourage you to look up the science behind it and research the various vendors offering it and their ingredients.

After taking up running and cutting out beer, it looks like my body has hit equilibrium at 171lbs. That about 25lbs down from a year ago with no other changes to diet.

I'm pretty happy here, though I wouldn't mind dropping to 160lbs. For now, I'm going to maintain a "don't eat stupid crap" diet.

After not being able to find Weber's Mediterranean seasoning anymore, this stuff has become my new go-to for trying to keep chicken dinners on the healthy side:

I've also started snacking on cottage cheese. I've always HATED cottage cheese, but apparently that's because someone was always making me try the atrocious low fat and trash brands. The full fat Breakstones stuff is actually pretty decent. Was surprised to see how much protein is in each serving.

I hate cottage cheese by itself, but dig it with fresh fruit. A great pre/post-workout snack.

Cottage cheese is best served with hot sauce or cholula.
Or try it Hungarian style with paprika and green onions

I just can't do cheese and fruit for whatever reason. Definitely more apt to try it with spicy/savory.

Haven’t been trying to lose weight necessarily (just my beer belly). Don’t have a scale but this is week 3 of going to the gym and I’m finally starting to not be dead after or sore for multiple days after. Just need to completely quit smoking cigs 😓

Yes. Yes, yes, and yes.

Good on you for exercising. Definitely headed in the right direction!

Started this year around 324 and it really sank in how out of shape I was after I took a very physical firefighting class with a bunch of guys still in high school. I gave it my all but being so out of breath and whooped after class got me down. Started eating better, mostly keto, and exercising in the next class I took. Weighed in at 298 this morning and started running yesterday. After I can get in the swing with that I’m going to start really focusing on calorie intake. End goal is probably in the 240-250 range.

It's been a little over a year since I really started trying to get healthier. I've only lost 30 lbs but I went from a 40 waist to a loose 36 and XXL to XL shirts. I am continuing to try to lose more weight but I feel better and have more endurance when exercising. Maybe next January I will have lost 20-30 more pounds.

Losing it over time like that makes it more likely you will keep it off, statistically. Good job.
Yep. There was a bit of a yo-yo effect with me. I concentrated suuuper hard to lose a large amount in a year, got down to about 220 eventually. I then sort of let my guard down, and over 6 months went back to about 250. I managed to arrest the spiral, make some changes that are more sustainable, and I'm pretty steady in the low 230s now, which is a fine weight for me.

According to the likely out of calibration scale at the YMCA, I'm right at 200 lbs, which is a solid 10 less than when I retired from active duty 15 years & 40 less than when I got sick of being fat & broken 2 years ago (after 10+ years at 235-240). I'm down to needing a belt with 34W pants from 36W & my XL shirts are miraculously no longer too short. Even lost the lion's share of my love handles, though at 54, I 'spect the ol' dad bod gut just ain't going away in its entirety.

GF & I joined the Y here in our little town so we could keep exercising/working out since we don't have enough light or warmth for our tastes to walk this time of year. I've been doing yoga a couple times a week during the day & we've been swimming 3-4x/wk at night for a month now & I feel better than I've felt in years & years. Not sure which kicks my butt harder, though. I knew swimming would be tough, but man, mad props to the yogis. That stuff is hard, at least when yer old & broken. Yowza.

They also offer kickboxing, "water combat", core strengthening, Pilates, etc. classes & have a really nice gym. Once I get a decent base down with the yoga & swimming (anytime I push too hard, I get (re)injured & I am SO over that), I want to check out the water combat & kickboxing classes.

I suspect I will always have remnants of the dad bod. I'm 56 and have been overweight and out of shape for the better part of a decade maybe a little longer. As long as I'm trying, I'm feeling better and it's working even a little I will be happy

Same. She's not quite a year older than me & we just want to stay fit & active. We're not done going on adventures & having fun.

Ended the year 12/31/23 at 201 lbs
Diet only, no serious exercise
Let's see what 2024 does for me.
What diet are doing? Keto or dropping most sugar/breads/carbs and eating smaller healthier portions?

dropping most sugar/breads/carbs and eating smaller healthier portions
Mostly this. I started using MyFitnessPal food/calorie logging app. I quickly realized sugar is a drug. I went through withdrawal when I cut out the junk food.

Instead, I found some high-protein, low-carb foods that I enjoy eating, and I watched my calories. I did not go Keto, just low-er carb. Doing that for a while, paying attention to how I feel after I eat this or that, and tweaking my eating habits a little bit at a time got me to a better place with food and into a totally different mindset: Food is fuel.

Key to success IMO is to not rely on willpower. Make small changes over time and pay attention. Find things you like to eat that will sustain you and won't leave you tired or make you crave more food. It's easy to move toward something you enjoy, and it becomes habit once you do it for a while.
