2023 Weight Loss Thread!

Down to 234 and change. Thankfully most of the Victoza side effects have seemingly subsided. Doing a good job of offsetting my cheat meals here and there, which are few and far between.

The other night, my wife walked in with "chorizo burritos" after visiting a friend's house. I had already eaten dinner, so I skipped breakfast the next morning in anticipation of that burrito. After one bite, I knew I had immediately been bamboozled. It had "vegan cheese" and "vegan chorizo" in it from her vegan friends' house who were adamant they could trick me. It tasted like hot garbage. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm now looking for a good divorce attorney.

I have been working with my doctor for awhile now to get my cholesterol down and we can actually see a trend downwards on the LDL. He's also noticed some other numbers improving to include my weight.

He seemed a little taken aback by the whole thing. I get the feeling most people either ignore his advice or go straight to a pill. I told him "why would I pay for your advice just to ignore it?"

I'm taking it as a small win!

Just curious, what cholesterol-specific dietary changes have you made?

I haven't been hyper focused on avoiding cholesterol heavy foods. Instead I've mostly been on a "don't eat garbage diet".

Fast food is pretty much completely gone from my diet. If it looks like a bad idea to eat that fill in the blank, it probably is. At least that's where my head is at. I've been avoiding oils and butter when I can. I'm avoiding alcohol, but that is a new thing and probably not represented in the trend.

The hardest part hasn't been what I eat, it's steering the whole family in that direction. If be perfectly happy eating fish, chicken, and fresh cooked vegetables for the rest of my life. My wife wants pasta, potatoes, red meat, rice, etc for every meal. When the inlaws visit, I end up throwing away a garbage bag full of cookies, snacks, cokes and other shit.

I'm not sure what they have going on over there in Greece, but I spent over a week drinking and sailing, and came back about 3-5 pounds lighter (giving a day or two to confirm what was actually water weight from the -5lbs down weigh). I am now 200lbs flat. I ate normal portions, but the food was typical Grecian meals with a few extra fried options thrown in. Breakfast was eggs or good yogurt with granola, lunches were usually a tomato heavy salad + cheese and some bread, dinner was pasta if we cooked on the boat, and a family style meal if we found a spot in port we liked, lots of seafood at the end of the trip. Another American buddy came back about 3lbs lighter as well.

Sounds like you cut out sugar for a week

Did 2.5 miles walking/jogging this morning (7am)

A year ago I was hitting it hard dropped some weight before the wedding. We're 11 months in and it's come back...with a vengeance.
So Im working again to lose weight by time school starts back
I really want to get to the 20X range. At 225 now

I've had a rough past 9 days (as related to diet). I'm blaming my wife. She wants to go out all the time, and going out means drinking and eating out. I jumped on the scale on Saturday and was 219, which represents a minor 1/2 pound set back...but the holiday ran through yesterday and after all the crap (22 chicken wings and curly fries and mango cheesecake) I shoveled in yesterday I'll stay off the scale until Friday. I'm skipping breakfast today, and my mid morning snack. I think I may just eat a light lunch, skip afternoon snack and then have dinner. Keep myself to about 500 calories for the day.

My diet isnt much better in the past two days
But Im still getting out to walk / jog and doing some light weight exercises at the house.
Im about to cancel my Planet Fitness membership. I fell into the trap of not going. Im just wasting money on that at this point and will be busy in a month from now. Ive got a weight room at work and will have access to a gym at college.

But this morning me and pup went for 1.5 miles

It was wet out this morning. My dog puts on the brakes if her wittle paws might get wet. She's an entitled enabler. I pulled her about a block just to get her business done and she pulled me home.

I figured I'd start a thread for those of us trying to get in better shape this year. In 2022, I went from 340b and hardly able to walk up 3 flights of stairs to 247 and running 10-15 miles a week. I'm sure there are people on here who want to make progress too, so think of this as an accountability thread. Going to a couple 3-gun matches and realizing that the moving was the hardest part was mainly what kickstarted me.

My goal for this year is to hit 225, and I'm hoping to get there doing exactly what I have been, tracking my calories in vs calories out and several 3-5 mile runs a week.. My current weight is still technically "obese" but juuuust barely for my 6'2" frame.

Post your current weight, goal weight, and plan if you're so inclined.
For the record, I’m 6’6… but no excuse of being 300lbs right now. I feel ok, and my cardio is decent. But I’m looking to get down to my playing weight around 265

Ive weighed 232 the past 3 mornings in a row....so ive dropped 5 lbs in the last two weeks...it will slow down and I am hoping for about a lb a week

I'm up a couple pounds. My diet over the past week hasn't been great, and I haven't exercised as much. I've 90 minutes of MMA tomorrow so I hope I can reset.

was difficult to stick to keto while back home (did good the 1st weekish), and had some planned indulgences (my favorite donut shop in the world was closing 😭). didnt see much of an impact when i jumped on the scale after getting home, still at 187, so back at it and looking forward to more gains (losses)

233 this morning. I figured I wouldn’t lose anything this week after a few cheats, but then realized I’ve missed several meals as well, particularly breakfast. Definitely having a tough time with exercise recovery despite trying to get in extra protein, but the calorie deficit is whooping my butt.

I've effectively stopped dieting this month. Too many things going on. Good news is my weight is holding at 220.

Gonna need me a new belt, my beltman and fatboy are on the last hole
That's why I like the ratchet belts. Just keep cinching, and if you end up with too much slack, you can just trim some more off the buckle end. I've only used Kore belts for years now.

Stop eating out and you’ll drop weight without any fancy diets.
Get into physical labor every day and weight loss will not be a problem.

Both knees have been bone on bone for 25 years. Both shoulders are wrecked. One was replaced. Both ankles are shot.

Pain is a daily thing but I won’t let it stop me.

I did things when I was young that would have killed most people. It has taken a toll.

I just threw on my run and gun gear and weighed myself. Chest rig with 6 loaded AR mags, 6 loaded G17 mags, rifle, and pistol and I'm only a few pounds heavier than I was without all that gear on a year ago.

That really puts into perspective all the extra weight I carried around every day!

I'm feeling a bit more agile myself here lately. I still have another GHB worth of blubber to shed but everything is trending in the right direction.

Hit 210 for the first time in many years, no idea where I am vs my goal but expect it’s slower than I wanted. Screwed my back up a couple weeks ago, so very little exercise, getting back on that next week.

Also dropping a statin and beta blocker, one of them seems to be causing a 3am glucose spike and generally elevated glucose and I don’t want that. Cardiac CT shows blockages of less than 25% so I’ll take the risk on borderline LDL for a few months. Also causing very vivid nightmares and night sweats.

Need more muscle mass.

If you have jacked up your back be gentle on exercise and don't push it. In the meantime do the things you can do, do them holding weights or at a fast-pace to increase your heart rate and turn it into a mini-HIIT session. Definitely check the diet.

Diet is how you lose weight, but exercise is how you get muscle mass.

If I stopped hurting I would think I was dead.

Well done everyone! Remember it's not a race, one meal, one snack, one day at a time. And it's okay to treat yourself.

Only problem with “treats” is most people live in a constant state of treating themselves. 🤣

My girth says you're right about the "treats". I think the lie I tell myself is they're "deserved", earned after having to eat poop all day for work.

Been stuck at 230 ish for the better part of a month now. Digestion on the Victoza has sped up some and appetite has increased somewhat. Going to need to filter out some of the cheats and just get more exercise in. The heat and my work schedule has kept me in the house in the evenings, and I need to get back to hiking twice a week.

You and me both. I basically suspended the diet until September. Weather and work and a puppy...good news is having 2 dogs is going to double my walking very soon.

I struggled with dieting for a long time and finally did two things that got it to stick and perhaps this will help others.

-Throw away you scale. It is just a psychological torture device that adds stress.
-Do small lifestyle changes one at a time. Once it has become ingrained add another. It takes longer to show results but they are permanent

lifestyle changes ( no particular order)
-no soda; only water, coffee or unsweet tea
-no fast food
-no alcohol
-no potatoes
-no cookies or candy

I found once you have not had soda or fast food for about 3 months it doesn’t taste good anymore and I naturally steer away from it.

Hope this helps. Keep up the fight everyone!

I hope people notice the trend:

-no soda; only water, coffee or unsweet tea (sugar)
-no fast food (crap)
-no alcohol (sugar)
-no potatoes (sugar)
-no cookies or candy (sugar)

Potatoes, also very starchy. Now, I don't do abstention. I occasionally enjoy a soda, fast food, alcohol, potatoes, candy and cookies. But they are treats and in small amounts. But you are right that eliminating these things will drop weight.

potatoes and alcohol I will indulge in occasionally (ingrained in our culture) but soda and fast food taste terrible to me now and I have no desire whatsoever. In fact McDonalds smells to me like garbage which is exactly what it is.

Can't tell you last time I went to McD's, and to me, and most fast food burgers taste the same. But I do enjoy my kids' 50% family discount at Chik-Fil-A, and I would eat Taco Bell far more often than I do if I could, and I would not rule out being a regular at Arby's if I had the chance lol. Taco Bell is the last FF joint in which I can spend under $5 and walk out feeling full. But it's rare that I go.

Edited to add, 'regular' sodas are cloyingly sweet to my, almost like syrup. When I do drink soda, which is occasional, it's diet. But I drink mainly water or coffee.

I can not longer eat at Taco Bell. Tastes wrong. I can only eat salad and egg mcmuffins from McDonalds, everything else tastes bad. Wendy's and BK both make me feel like I've been licking old fryer grease.

It is helpful to one's diet when the food just tastes so bad you don't want it.

When I had my cancer surgery, they cut several nerves that link to my taste buds. I do not eat nearly as much ice cream or other sweets as I used to because it all just tastes the same. Just...sugar. Some things are better, some brands seem to be worse, but as a rule, I just don't like sugary things like I used to.

I will say, my sister-in-law made a homemade fig ice cream about which I was most dubious but it was some of the best ice cream I have ever, ever had.

ive been off sugar for 4 months now. I ate one oreo last nite as a “treat” and about gagged. im not sure if I should be happy or mad about that. i used to love oreos.
