Nice looking Tula!

SKS day! Earlier today I finally took a 20-round Chinese box magazine off of a Russian SKS, and put a non-matching Russian 10-rounder on it. I then took the 20-rounder and put it on a "paratrooper" SKS. (it was set up for the detachable 30-rounders). I bought a short bayonet for it, but a full size came instead. I also need a shortened cleaning rod for it.

Finally hooked a bit of a white whale of mine - a numbers-matching, pre-chrome lined Russian Tula SKS. This one likely has an arsenal replaced stock, but at 73 years old it is beautiful nonetheless. Bore and internals are excellent. Period-correct first style sling is en route from Ukraine.

I've been chasing one of these for a reasonable deal for a couple years. Two separate agreed upon sales fell through last second by the sellers. Third time's a charm!

I would consider an arsenal replaced stock as good as original.

That use FAL mags or something else?
I think sometimes you could find modified m14 magazines for them, but I believe they are a distinct type.

I've also heard the later ( the Modern ones in use in the ACE series world wide) rock and lock Galil mags in .308 can have issues locking into older guns due to magwell changes.

I have two of the IWI made ones for the ACE, won't even come close to rocking in on the MR331.

Israel (IMI) made "waffle" style, 25 and 11 round capacity. They are expensive these days, at least the 25 rounders.

Like @Desolo said you can modify m14 mags (I have a few) and you can also get https://stores.csspecs.com/galil-308-25rd/

You really cant go wrong with anything made by Csspecs!

I always wondered why they changed the mag wells... you would think they would love to be able to continue to sell to legacy markets aswell.

I had looked for a long time researching what the best way to mount an optic on an AK is and I finally came across the Attero mount. I opted for the the PA SLx 1x version and my optic came in today. Installation was very simple and I'm really enjoying the optic and this set up. Some people complain the dust cover is difficult to remove with it on, mine isn't hard to remove but I'll definitely be getting some scratches on it. I think it's a fair trade off. Really looking forward to taking it to the range.

Are you able to co-witness with that optic setup? I’ve been eyeballing one

It depends on your mount. If you choose a red dot, yes, if the mount supports it. I chose to go with the microprism so there isn't a way to cowitness.

Just curious, and no shots fired your way - when researching the "best" optic mount, what drove you away from a side rail mount setup?

They just seem bulky as hell to me. If I was to get a side rail mount optic, I would opt for a PK01 or some other authentic optic. Problem is, the build quality isn't too good on those.

That's fair. I have a couple AKs equipped with Attero mounts, but I haven't found anything remotely as good as RS Regulate side mounting systems. I don't like sacrificing the rear leaf for the sake of arguably a bit less bulk. Also, FWIW I haven't had a PK optic fail on me yet.

To each their own!

I had a PK01 I bought off someone from Armslist, it was mint, barely breathed on, and when I took it to the range the reticle was floating. Luckily he gave me my money back.

I have no first hand experience with side mounts or the RS Regulate, I'm just not a fan of them. Nor am I a fan of Ultimaks. So that leaves irons or the Attero mount. It is what it is.

Bummer to hear about that. The fact he gave you your money back makes me wonder if he knew the optic was clapped and was hoping you wouldn't notice.

I have no idea, I will admit I flew off the handle and the fact that he still met to give me my money back was nice so I gave him some 9mm as an apology. He said it worked fine for him. I'll never know for certain though.

Venturing back into AKs after a long hiatus.
Thankfully traded into one with @Hunter600rr and I’m slowly going to be modding it into something which will be a good alternative to my AR

PSA AK105 in 5.45x39

Plan is to make it somewhat modern by doing the following:
-install Magpul plum handguards(ordered)
-install a Bulgarian 4.5mm triangle side folder (talking to someone now who might have one to trade, if not Soviet stocks it is)
-Install US Palms plum AK grip
-debating between ultimak or attero mount. Want to be able to still have irons as back up

Need to get more ammo and mags, but having to wait for my VA comp claim to be finished before I dive into that. Will probably go with the Bulgarian commercial mags ($12 on gun mags and Soviet stocks) to start as it’ll hurt to pay $50 a mag for the circle 10. Plus want to run a bunch of ammo through it to ensure function before dropping more money into it.

I know PSA just got into the AK game and had some hiccups early on, but I’m looking forward to running this especially with the tool craft parts in it.
