G's Garage

I feel your pain.
we moved from a home with a big garage and full basement in NH to a rental in Raleigh with a standard 2 car garage, no basement, and a small shed.
we plan to build in the the next year or so therefor I was planning on putting the riding mower in the shed and renting space for some of the stuff.
to my surprise the Rental had a workbench and shelving in the garage and I was able to stuff the stuff into it and still leave room for my wife’s van. The only issue is that I can’t find anything.

If you re-arrange everything, how are you going to find anything? You're obviously not an old dude with memory issues. 🤣

Me? I’m a few days away from 77 so I’m an old dude but still remember to zip up…
the first sign of getting old is when you forget to zip up….
A sign of getting real old is when you forget to zip down

The damn re-arrangement happened during a move.

We packed everything we owned, except two antique cars, into a 55 ft trailer and my 18 ft car hauler with 4 ft high sides.
Other than furniture, the stuff came from a basement workshop (mostly wood working things like radial arm saw, planner, chop saw, edger, table top saw, etc.) and a oversized garage with at least 4 tool boxes, spare motor & transmission, air compressor, generator, car parts, lawn tractor, etc.

It took one day for 5 guys to unload the 55 footer - Then another 4 weeks for me to unload the car hauler, because I needed to make the house livable.
At this time I’m lucky to find the garage light switch and the beer.

PS — I knew where the Guns and ammo were at all times…

@HMP I think I spy some Costco black bins with the yellow tops in there.

I just got a couple of these for my basement, randomly came across them and think they will do a good job for my purposes and might for you. Biggest drawback is three middle shelves only support 50 lbs so you've got to watch the weight on some of the bins (if you need to pack heavy in all of them, shelves will work better).

Well, this is the 'The Garage' section, so here we go.
Ive not been pleased, entirely, with the state of my garage since tearing down the old building out back last Thanksgiving. It just got cluttered when I had to move stuff in, I got more new stuff and it got more cluttered. It's cluttered.

Then, about two weeks ago I got inspired. A guy posted his garage mess on the Grassroots Motorsports board...wow, it was way worse than mine! But someone suggested spending 30 minutes a day, and it sounded good. Half an hour isnt too much, but it's enough time to get some stuff done without being too overwhelmed. Some days I just hit that amount, some days it's two hours +.

SO, here are some 'before' pictures.

I’ve got those same bins, n the rack though. The bins are surprisingly sturdy.

Buddy I searched a long time for that, it's the same kind of bike (year and color) that I learned to ride on as a kid (12)

So mine were/are from Home Depot and not very large. They were clearanced out to one dollar a piece, I picked up all five they had that day
But I like that rack!

So, not much updates, had Masonic stuff Thursday, stayed with Fiance Friday and Saturday
There has been more cleaning, more purging, and getting more stuff shipped out to folks, which is good.

I will be assembling a storage rack I bought some time ago, it'll house/hold my hockey gear plus some.
As someone else said - GOING UP! I like racks a lot, tall ones, because youre using the same square footage but utilizing the whole/most of the wall. Ill get more, too.

I had some wrench organizers come in yesterday, so I'll be cleaning up the toolbox a bit, but that's a different thread..
Also Im likely buying some peg board today and putting some on my one workbench for added space

I’m trying to do the “going up” method in my shop now too. Some 2’ deep pallet rack shelving would be awesome. About 10’ high would work out great for me.

I bought some 22” deep HD wall mount shelf brackets that I’m going to use for a shelving system. I’m going very high with them on the wall to keep the lower wall space open.

I had a hard time finding 24” pallet racking used. Wound up buying deeper stuff, cutting the cross braces and rewelding them. Not hard to do if you find a deal on 3-4’ stuff. For that stuff to hold as much weight as it does, it gets sketchy standing on it 10-12’ up.

Used to stack my jet skis on them in the back of the shop, worked well but I’m getting to the point that I don’t like “open” storage as much as I used to.

Im still at it. Not much to show/tell, but I am loving spending time out there. Tonight was about 3 hours of going through stuff, tossing things, putting things in the 'free' pile etc

Got this paper towel holder from the fiance for Christmas
So added that, that'll be one less thing on a bench or shelf etc, more handy location, too

RJfnxP7.jpg

Ended up getting pegboard and put up a 4x2 piece on the back of the workbench. Never had pegboard before, trying out different thing with it, seeing what 'feels' right when working at it etc. Here is current configuration.
I do like how it gets things more in front of you, gets some things out of the tool chest (ie, the hammers), and has some flexibility with storage/organization.
Gave up some space to add a picture, the last picture, of me and my grandparents. This was at my college graduation and would end up being the last picture of the three of us together. I miss my Pop so danged much.

I had pulled the computer cart out to use as a mobile workbench when doing the intercooler on the MR2...and then it didnt make it back to it's hole. Well, I corrected that tonight.

It 'lives' under/in half of the hockey goal. It's got about a 38" opening tall and 17.5" wide, but opens up on the inside a bit larger.

But this got it out of the second bay, where it took up a ton of space, then I put the old suspension components inside, for now. I need/want to bring the shelves home and put at least one back in it.

Cleared up about 8sq ft of floor space with moving this back to where it belongs. Then another 2sq ft where the old springs were, and an additional (approx) 4 where the boxes with the old suspension set up in them. 14 doesnt sound like a lot, but it FEELS like a lot when youre in there and have more working room.

Also tonight, I got some old oil into jugs to take to recycling center tomorrow or Wednesday, no point in keeping old oil, two less milk jugs in the garage.
Little by little, Im making progress.

@BatteryOaksBilly I'll update my LIST soon for you, I know youre eager
But more stuff gets added and more gets checked off.

I just finished (ten minutes ago? and the car is still jacked up) installing a front lip on it. And then, while thinking, "all done" I remembered a box or two I had on the MR2 shelving unit (yeah - I got a small shelving unit with just parts on it) - I put on the Porsche GT3 brake ducts that I ordered from Pelican Parts a while back.
This was something that I found out about through the GRM board, one of their editors now has a SW20 MR2 and posted about these being offered for quite cheap. A sub-$30 upgrade that should help with some brake cooling.

Brakes are still high on the list, will sell the Benz Brembos and, once the wedding and honeymoon is paid for, look towards a Wilwood kit from one of the MR2 specialty shops

1988. EFI engine (new for that year, if I read right). Automatic. 4WD.

I'll post up much more tomorrow when I can thoroughly document, but this is a P R O J E C T, needs a lot. But I think I got a good runner (well, I KNOW it drives well, already drove about an hour or so...and already been pulled by a NC State Trooper - no tags yet, bought tonight).
@BatteryOaksBilly - brother, this time it'll be a LONG list, I know youre a fan of my lists.
Lots of broken old plastic interior pics, some rust - one spot real bad, others not as much, will need some bushings and such.
But it runs and I think I got a good price on it. Negotiated for a roof-top storage basket too.

Here's what I got tonight to show you:

I think the demand for the 60 series is going to get stronger and stronger. Good runners ain’t cheap and those done back right are bring some song money. That said parts will be doing the same so when you see something you are gonna need buy it!

Yeah, I think it's something that if I dont love it in a year I can probably get all my money back and then some.

Plans, basically, are to get it back to new-ish. Deep cleaning interior, work on body/rust/paint. Fix broken bits. Tighten up the suspension with new parts and bushings etc
Not planning on a big lift and huge tires. I want to take it camping and pull some stuff.

Back in my restoration days (last was my son’s C-10) we use to walk the swap meets and salvage yards for parts. I am gonna guess the dash is toasted?

Two cracks right at instrument cluster. Pics tomorrow of all the issues to sort

Looks like a fun project. Keep us posted with pics.

Nice find and very cool project! Can’t wait to see how it progresses.

Well Im buying my first part for it today...a gas cap. Doesnt have one. And while I doubt something that old is too sensitive, there's a CEL and I wonder if that MAY have some cause to it. Fingers crossed, right?
Just going by one of the local parts places and getting a new metal cap like came on it.

Pics to come, likely after I have breakfast, but maybe later on tonight. We're going back out to Pfafftown in a bit to get the spare tire and some tools (I think he means factory tool kit, we'll see). It's a busier day, so it might be tonight before I can post them.

As I stated, lots of issues to work on/fix - some big, some small.
I started on a small one today and decided to stop at one door for now as I just need to get new speakers - let me explain.

Lbjuwkx.jpg

This is as far as the front windows would roll down - PO said it was due to the door speakers, it was hitting the magnet on them. Ok, let me add a spacer and that should fix it...and it did! But as I was messing with these Polk speakers, I noticed that the foam/rubber outside of the cone was cracking and tearing. So, on what Im reading on IH8MUD, I think I'll be looking at some kicker units to replace and then it'll sound better and just WORK.

Driver's side done with some nylon spacers, wife approves.

One thing I negotiated for was this top rack/basket. I looked online, briefly, and these seem quite expensive (this is coming from a man who has never even price shopped one of these ha)

Underneath pics - only one side of the rear sway bar is attached: there's not even another mount there to attach it to - need help here!
9tUpSn4.jpg

On the front - this is the drivers side shock, and then Ill post the passenger's side - one has a little bushing/spacer, driver's side doesnt. Again, NEED HELP!
Also, all four shocks are Old Man Emu brand, which Ive heard of that brand from a friend but these might be old, who knows.

Man … the drip rail concerns me about the roof and pillar. You are gonna be pulling that headliner at some point. The frame rails look like they need some major lovin’ too … that looks like stripping down.

From experience with 60 series cruisers, the frame and the roof concern me. My first 62 was very similar to that when I got it. Most of the body can be fixed relatively easy but the roof and pillars can get complicated. I'd definitely make sure right away there are no holes in the rain gutter letting water in. The rear frame sections are notorious for rust. It looks to me yours are pretty rusty based on the wavy inner C channel. I would investigate that. There are fab companies that make some patch panels if needed. I have never used any and don't know what all is available. There are probably still fab companies that make the rear swaybar mount that you are missing also.

If it were mine, I'd make sure there are no holes in the body letting water in and then focus on safety to get it drivable. Rear frame would be a priority to make sure it is structurally sound, fix the sway bar and get a bushing and washer for the front shock. From some mismatching bolts, it looks like some things were just thrown on there. I'd go over the complete suspension making sure everything is in place and tightened down. Go over the braking system also.

After you feel good about the structure, I'd focus on the body. That is where probably your largest expense will be and will determine if it is worth a complete restore. When that is complete or at least you determine it can be done, you can start on all the small jobs including interior cleanup/restore, tires, etc... All these little things add up quick and would seem to be easy to do up front. I started small with my first one and neglected the body. Ended up with a great interior, OME lift, ARB lockers, 4.56 gears, ARB bumpers with winch etc... The body then started falling apart and I left literal chunks of it on the trails. I ended up buying another and moving most of the upgrades over to the new one and scrapped the first one.

IH8mud forum will definitely be your friend during all this. Some very knowledgeable guys over there. I'll be in touch in the next week or two after I get over to my rental and see what kind of spare parts I have left.

I would recommend joining ONSC, Olde North State Cruisers. soon,
we have a great camping trip at uwharrie next month. check out our forum on ih8mud

That looks really good, until I saw the rust underneath. That’s concerning. Not saying I’d run, but I wouldn’t put much money into it until you’re confident you can repair and structural rust damage and coat the frame to protect it going forward.

As for the shocks, OME are a solid low-midrange option, right there with Bilstien, and very common on Toyota’s. It looks like the rubber bushing dry rotted and fell off, cheap and easy fix if the nut will come off. You need the rubber bushing and the stepped steel washer.

In regards to the bushing that @Jerzsubbie and @Carolinatlc pointed out - my friend (who also has a 62 sent me a link to Amazon and some dorman replacements and I think they'll be here today.

I am, now, on IH8 and asking questions and getting advice.
I will try to work on little things as I can and have the body looked at ASAP. I just need to find someone that can work on it and not charge an arm and leg.
Ideally, I'd like to be under 5k put into this truck. Again, not looking to do crazy bumpers and lift kits etc, just want to be able to enjoy taking some camping trips and around town.

As far as the Old North State club - I will find that on the forum and sign up, but that trip next month is likely out for me.

Yall are great, I love the honest feedback and the experience and opinions on these things. Yall rule.

1st the MR2 and now this. Making me jealous man. I've always drooled over both. You still have the MR2?
Yep, still got it too.
Sadly, Im at 3 cars now. Wife has two vehicles. Gonna get cramped when she's living here (we stay together nightly, but go from my house to hers as she's slowly moving in)

I'll post it here too...
My wife, looking up 62s on social media while laying her head on my lap.

BWANhBZ.jpg

Last night I changed out the speakers in the front doors. Ordered some pioneer units that are a shallow design, so now both windows roll all the way down, no spacers etc

Ive got the bits to fix the glovebox on the way.
I'll LIKELY do the front shock bushings today, one is missing, the other is probably super worn.
Little by little

That one looks pretty clean. There are many nicer cruisers out there for half that price though. I reached out to a guy I sold one of mine to 10 years ago to see if he still had it. He does and he is thinking about selling. I'm running over Sunday afternoon to take a look.
