How do you deal with Liberal Family Members?

I didn’t read this thread other than the OP.

For me, I’m fortunate that my entire family is extremely conservative and borderline rabid when it comes to libertarian ideals. A few are staunch republicans and statist on the right side of the spectrum but not that many.

My wife’s family, on the other hand, are all true blue, died in the wool Democrats and borderline, if not card carrying socialists. Her dad did vote for Trump but it was a vote against Hilary. He just could not pull the lever for her and almskt abstained.

As to dealing with them, I generally don’t have to, at least not anymore. For years they would try to engage me and I would respond, sticking to the facts and demolishing their “opinions”.

At one sitting, about 10 years ago I finally just said “Look, here is why we will never see eye to eye on this. I see the world and the people for what they are and want to see choices based on that. You see the world and the people in it for what you wish they were and want to see laws passed to aid that vision”.

I was speaking to my MIL specifically when I said it but they all got the message. Surprisingly for the first and last time ever, she agreed with me.

Since then we talk about family and work and I don’t get asked my political opinions.

If I remember correctly your wife and her family are Jewish. I used to work for a very wealthy Jewish guy from Chicago. Filthy rich as in yachts and private jets with full time crews wealthy. Great people. But lifelong Democrats and some of the family was very socialistic. We had a couple conversations about why the Jewish people have always supoorted Democrats and Marxists in the US when Left wing tolitarian regimes have done so much damage to the Jewish people. It has always blown my mind. He had no answers. But he was dead honest. He told me that every election cycle he let his accountant tell him which candidate would be better for his finances. Other than that he didn't feel that most politicians really effected his life much at all anyway. If it hasn't been done already someone smarter than me should do a book on the subject.
 
Any of y'all got a brother that posted on fb that gun owners have more in common with school shooters than regular people and we'll never let gun laws become reality because it's all about money and white supremacy? Yeah, I do and he's white and has a net worth of around 400k with no debt.

I said that's an irresponsible statement and that he should delete it. He said prove me wrong, until then I stand by it.

That spiraled into the 2 of us agreeing that maybe we need to avoid each other. Sad really, when you think about it.
 
My little brother would probably fall into that camp (minus the net worth bit), but he's part of a branch of the ol' family tree that hasn't been a part of my life for a few years now.

How about 10's-100's of millions of gun owners never shot up a school or anyone else. In fact, if they did have "more in common with shooters" all the leftist diptards would already be dead. Or something like that. :p

If Person A thinks that owning a gun indicates that Person B is unstable then why does Person A tend to yell, threaten, etc. at Person B?

The majority of the Jewish folks I know are fairly politcally apathetic but are very well armed. I only have one Jewish buddy who actually likes guns but on the whole I have found that Jewish folks understand the importance of being armed better than most other people. It makes sense given what they have been through.

I was actually surprised when my wife jumped in and took my side. I was so happy that she did that.

That was enough to make me change the conversation to something less political. That's all. I just wanted to complain about my liberal family members AND brag about my wife.

They may be armed, that wasn't what I was speaking to. In general they have supported exactly the kind of politics and regimes that have caused considerable harm to their populations throughput history. To sum it up, they are prwctically Marxists. Or at least strident socialists. Weird.
 
Most of the Jewish people I've met are heavily liberal, if not outright socialist. I've even read articles in the past written by rabbi's and religious leaders discussing the role of socialism in Judaism. The Communist/Soviet revolution in Russia was primarily lead by Jewish people. Stalin and Marx were both ethnically Jewish, despite claiming to not be religious.

I don't have a lot of "modern" liberal family members. I do have quite a few dyed in the wool democrats, but most of them are democrats because their parents/grandparents supported FDR during the depression, and they were told "Democrats care about the poor/working class", and they've never taken the time to question that line. My own grandmother was about as conservative as one could be, but voted straight ticket democrat all her life, because "Republicans only care about rich people". That's convictions for you. Some folks make up their minds once, and never evaluate their feelings again once they do.

The very few modern liberal family members I have, I just don't talk to about politics. Some I don't talk to at all, because they're just unpleasant people in general, and the others are really kind, caring folks, but very misguided in my opinion. Most everyone in my family has a few guns, primarily for hunting. I am the only "gun guy" in my family that I'm aware of.

I have had the exact opposite experience with my wife's family, extended family and their friends and family. I can't tell you how many times (before they quit talking to me about it) that I have uttered the words "How in the hell, based on the lessons the Jewish people should have learned from the holocaust, can you possibly believe that".

Some of them can't even understand why the Israelis carry guns everywhere, and the ones that do only capitulate their exceptence because they are in a constant struggle there.

Of all of them, only my FIL owns any guns at all and most of his are replica cowboy guns because he line dances and thinks of himself as hopalong Neucebahm.

They honestly to god have the mentality that getting rid of guns from civilians is a great way to have peace as long as the right people control the government.

I admittedly don't know a ton of Jewish people but the ones I am friends with have either lived in the south for so long they eat BBQ or have close ties to Israel. The reason I think that Jews have a reputation for being so liberal is that many of them are academics/professors that grew up in large cities. The vast majority of non business professors I had were over educated liberal morons no matter their relgion/race.

I DID move 3000 miles (from California to NC). The MIL and BIL came with us (like two stray cats that followed our car)... I love shooting but wouldn't call it "rabidly"... Boolits are too spencive nowadays... And I deleted FB 4 years ago. That was an awesome decision...

Well, I'm 70 [In the last quarter my 70 year old friends say], never in my life been on or belonged to Assbook. Even at my advanced age I never learned how to calmly talk to people who will not be reasoned with. I have determined, and this applies ONLY to me, to do my very best at avoiding talking to people who have the ability to aggravate me. It is not good for me and under the worst circumstances, could lead to bodily harm. Most of my close shooter friends know that I do not like leaving the gates. It seems to me, the farther I am from my gates, the worse the people I meet are. Please, do yourself a favor, stop being in this person's company. Nothing good can come from it. He is NOT family and never will be your friend. It seems he gets satisfaction trying to rile you up. From this point on, if you continue to feed him and let him in your home, whatever happens is on YOU. It's YOUR home. People who disrespect you in your home do it because they got away with it the last time. Stop it. Remember what the Godfather said...Act like a MAN!!!

I learned this lesson pretty early in life. I will have polite discussions with people that disagree with me as long as they remain polite. In those cases, even if I think they are dead ass wrong I will eventually just say "We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one". But if they become antagonistic I will simply walk away and shut them out. Life is to short for me to spend part of it in jail because I allowed someone to anger me past the point of reason.

I also learned very early (in my mid 20's) that blood isn't always family and family isn't always blood. I personally have never understood the phrase "Well they're family so what am I supposed to do?" Simple, you lay down the rules for your home and if they can't abide by them they are not welcome there.

My wife's parents decided many years ago that if they came to visit they are better off staying in a hotel and I do the same if we have to go visit them. The only reason I have any contact with them at all is because my son is their grandchild, but I have laid down very clear rules about that as well and if I think for a second that they are undermining my teaching with my son they will lose that contact as well.

And I would do the same to anyone in my blood family as well.

I love all boobs... I don't care what color or religion they are... You know most people in Israel are required to do time in the military. I don't know why, but it's a thing for girls in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) to take sexy pics in and out of their uniforms... If you google something like "Nude Israeli military girls" there are tons of pics of gorgeous Israeli girls posing with their M16s...

I would gladly let any of the IDF chicks fondle my Schmeckle. The girl had a lot of family that served in the IDF and went from zero to sixty if Palestine was mentioned.
