Ketosis

How are you guys dealing with fruit? I get the strict keto frowns on it some. But honestly, I might be ok loosing 10 lbs but not much more than that. So I'm not going strict anyway. In it for the cholesterol change, and loving being less achy. I usually do a fruit with breakfast and have done 1/2 an apple and PB with lunch the last couple days. Mostly curious.

What fruit? There is very little room for fruit in the keto diet. As I understand it, and I don't think you see it the same way. You're either on a keto diet or your not. You can't kinda sorta do the parts you want. Otherwise, high fat plus more carbs than you need will just make you fat.

From what I've read you need to be really strict on your first two weeks and use the test strips to see when your body releases the ketones. Then you can slowly work in a very moderate amount of carbs (fruit) while monitoring your body. Bananas and apples are the worst, unfortunately.

Get some ketone test strips. If your in moderate ketosis, then your diet is fine, if you aren't. Then your diet is wrong.

Plan on doing that after a couple more days. I can tell you things feel "different". But need the strips to see if different is right, or just different. Grabbed the My Fitness app and trying to start tracking. Tracking and testing are the only ways to know for sure I guess.

And based on that app I can eat well and loose a pound a week. 2530 calories. Pretty sure I can beat that now. Not so sure I was beating it before that's for certain. Of course I'm watching the macros too to see how my averages are running.

To the right vs wrong idea, it seems there are levels to this plan. Cutting weight, maintaining weight, and building muscle. Although I may end up finding out I need to cut first to get things kick started. That is certainly possible. I'm looking at this kind of long term, so not as tied to short term markers as long as I'm headed in the right direction. Weight is decent, cholesterol is only about 10 above, BP has come down with exercise but still on low dose medication. Would LOVE to get off the meds as a bonus. Kind of wading into this a bit slowly. Having the wife on board is an absolute plus.

I am keto clueless, but I do have experience with cholesterol and BP meds. IMO they are worthless. And possibly worse. Most of the BP and cholesterol myths of the last 25 years have been debunked in the last year or so. Only way I'd be on those was if I just had heart surgery or was in major danger of a heart attack. It is pretty much standard procedure to prescribe them to lots of people. When I stopped taking mine I felt and slept better instantly. Lots of people have strange side effects with that crap. Including memory loss. Anything that messes with your brain can't be good. Hope this diet allows you to get clear of the meds. Good luck.

Thanks, me too. The statins are poison imo. But I only take them 2 times a week. Tried daily and it was aweful. He's been on me to change my diet. Upping the cholesterol meds plus seeing that I'm fine eating most of this food has gotten me started. Luckily the BP meds came down already.

Another calculator.

Ruled.me is a great source also.

I'd get some test strips and see if your producing ketones. It was down today for me, in the light to moderate level. Could be the mints I had today which shouldn't effect anything. But who knows sometimes.

Keto is the bee's knees.

For those asking what to eat, here's a typical burger at my house.

Also, while not strictly keto based, I'd recommend the following:

The episode of Joe Rogan with Gary Taubes.

That Sugar Film

Sugar Coated

"Fat Head" is kind of quirky, but does a good job explaining fat vs carbs, cholesterol, etc.

"The Perfect Human Diet" is alright too, not super entertaining, but informative.

Ok. So you guys have convinced me to give this a shot. I've put on more mass and fat recently that I don't normally carry. I crash everyday around 3 oclock and never feel like I get good rest, so I'm thinking maybe sleep apnea. Wife says my breathing at night scares her because I go from snorring to not breathing for a few seconds. I have a larger than normal neck as well, that I have read also may contribute.
I have strength trained since I was in high school so I am very accustomed to 6 meals a day very high in protein, low fat, so this really feels like I am cheating...I have been transitioning into this since Thurs and really feel better.
I just have a few questions for you guys...
How many meals a day do you have and how often?
Do you try to have your last meal by a certain time?
If you strenght train do you have an extra pre or post workout meal/shake?
Thanks In Advance!

I kinda winged it this morning with my own recipie...
4 whole egg omlet with cheese, cilantro, cherry tomatoes and jalapenos.
5 pieces of bacon.

Yeah I eat on paper plates when its just me...

It's officially one week since my wife and I started. I have lost six pounds my wife is down four, no joke. Probably mostly water weight but I've stayed hydrated reasonably well fed. The diet was moderately difficult in the beginning but got easier everyday. I am having trouble sleeping though. One shot of melatonin will put me to sleep but I wake up around 3-4 am and have trouble getting back to sleep. If I can hit the 10lb mark, that's more than my goal and I'll pause there. Put some more carbs back in my diet and try to find a balance. If I gain back more than a few pounds then I'll keto cycle again soon.

My wife's Crohn's disease is causing lots of stomach pains, so she ate the old food yesterday and no pains up to today. So we may have to pause this till after her next surgery.

I have spot read most of these posts, so I just wanted to share my experience with Keto.

In August of 2015, I was experiencing feelings like panic attacks. I was under a lot of stress etc. I made a Dr. appt. I thought I was having some kind of cardiac event. I was diagnosed T2 diabetic, blood pressure was 185/100+, Triglycerides were literally off the chart, Cholesterol was over 300. The Dr. gave me an EKG in the office, told me to go see my eye Dr, get a stress test and see a nutritionist, and loose weight. She prescribed me a BP pill.

Because of the T2 diagnosis, I started researching low carb. Adkins. and I found Keto and started the next day. She scheduled a 30 day follow up, then a 90 day follow up, then a 6 mo follow up. The first 30 days I had lost something like 20 pounds, at the 90 day I had lost nearly 40 pounds, my Cholesterol. dropped 100 pts, my BP meds were cut in half, Trigs were in the normal range. After 6 months, she took me off BP meds and all blood numbers were in normal ranges. I also kicked the diabetes.

I literally believe this "life style change" saved my life. I still, almost 2 years later, follow the Keto diet. I've lost over 60 pounds and feel great. I have never dieted a day in my life until that day. I never did any of the things my Dr. wanted me to. No stress test, no eye doctor, none of it. My Dr. literally said to me "I don't care that you didn't do any of those things, you did it on your own. That is the most miraculous turnaround I have seen in my career as a doctor".

I also had/have a skin disease called Hidradenitis. I have not had an outbreak since starting Keto. Keto isn't the cure all but it sure has changed my life. There is a great Keto sub on Reddit. Very supportive. (r/keto) If anyone needs advice or has questions, PM me. I'm not the know all but I've helped quite a few get on track and loose weight.

One week in my wife and I are down 13 lbs total. Both feeling so much better too. I've started mostly snacking for lunch instead of eating a big lunch.

Spooks, talked to a buddy of mine and he has a similar story. He had that Dr visit in his early 30's. Dr told him he would not live to see his young sons graduate. He got squared away and told the Dr he would call him when he turned 70. He made that call a couple months back.

Taubes' book Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It, is a good read...

Your liver will turn protein into sugar. You want to eat a lot of fat, not a lot of protein.
To expand on this, since it seems like protein and fat go hand in hand, when I make my lunch for work, I'll use chicken or roast beef lunchmeat with guacamole instead of turkey since turkey is usually really lean, and I get more fat from the beef and chicken.

BTW, that My Fitness Pal app has been the reason I've been able to figure this out. Man that app is awesome! You can have things explained until the cows come home, but when you can click on the food and get a chart of how it breaks down it makes a huge difference. I started with some things I thought were good, then tweaked them when the app showed they were not so good. And I even nerded out at the grocery store today walking back and forth comparing carbs, fat, and cholesterol on butter vs creamer for coffee. Picked up some butter to try and have come coconut oil already at home. I'll see which I like better. The hardest part for me is starting to mentally look for fat to put in my diet. Very backwards to what I'm used to but the scale doesn't lie. It's working.

Kinda sorta but not entirely. Protein breakdown creates smaller substrates, among which are glucogenic amino acids. The amino acids are broken down in the liver, and stored as glucose in gluconeogenesis. What is interesting is that although it creates more glucose production (and storage) in the liver, it does not increase glucose release into the blood and cells. A lot of protein is negligible to blood glucose levels.

You are right in that you need a healthy balance of fat as fat doesn't really do anything to the glucose levels. Too much fat does increase insulin resistance, though.

And to be sure, there is such thing as too much protein, which can be detrimental in a couple ways.

I need to get back to it. My weight had blossomed over time until about 3 years ago, could hardly bend over to get my hunting boots on if I was wearing coveralls. In a fairly short amount of time I went from about 210 back down to 175 (I am only 5'10" tall) I feel peckish at 175, but think I look better. Feel best when I weigh about 185. I am not a bread eater, but had to cut out all the pasta, pretty easy to do overall. Slowly fell away and back up to about 190 now, just need to focus on the food again. Only craving I had was for processed sugar junk. Stuff I would not even eat before, jelly beans, crap like that.

What are some quick grab and go breakfast items you guys eat? Not that I need to loose weight (need to gain 10-20 pounds). When I was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes I did this diet for a while but slipped.

We will cook up a bunch of sausages and boil eggs ahead of time. Cold boiled egg, pop a sausage in the micro for 30 seconds, grab my coffee, and I am on the go.

I'll make a "frittata" in a deep skillet, with eggs, cheese and sausage or whatever add ins you want, cut it into slices. Can just grab and go. It's decent cold as well.

I'm four weeks in or so on keto. Feeling better than ever and going harder on the weights than I have in probably the last five years. I didn't really "need" to go on the diet, but it was more out of curiosity. I've really enjoyed the heck out of it. Ate out with my wife yesterday and that was a little bit of a pain trying to maneuver around the menu but no big deal.

I can't give up PB

Actual peanut butter (ground peanuts) is fairly low in carb, about 2/serving. The stuff they stick in jars is pumped full of sugar though. Just grind your own or have it ground when you go to the grocery.

Between Oral steroids for a back injury, a high stress office job, and entirely too much beer I had gained 60 lbs. 60 lbs! In three years time....

I started a Keto diet on March 3rd and I was at 233 lbs. I weighed my self this morning and I am down to 212. My work uniform that I could barely fit into anymore is now falling off of me, my belt is on the tightest notch, and my favorite cargo shorts now require a cinched down belt to keep them on.

Oh, and I forgot to add... I think that my cognitive levels have actually improved as well. It actually feels like I'm smarter than I was off of the diet. Weird.

Good to know. We both know of a cop who had cognitive issues on the job and what happened (black humor aside...).

It's amazing how much not moving impacts you. I am in an office role now and if I don't move every hour or so my joints are killing me.

I eat skippy's natural creamy and 2-3 apples a day. When I get a sweet craving, it's my go to drug.

True lol. Though I wasn't deficient in my cognitive abilities, now on this diet I just feel... sharper.
