That’s awesome. Looks like little man and the deer are about the same size.

Yeah. It was the first time seeing a deer for him. Not something I would usually shoot. He wanted to harvest it so we did. Now we’re looking for horns.

This 8 pointer came out this morning right as I was about to get out of my stand. Not huge but not small either. Our family is on a bit of a "meat stocking mission" this year. So far it's been working out really good.

I doubled up this morning with this 7 pt and a doe that had thick fat on her back and fist size gobs of fat inside. Not a very big rack, but decent body size for the area these came from. 2 more notches in the 6.8 stock.

Nice deer!

To the "meat stocking," this season isn't going too well for me. Between not getting any real seat time and not seeing much when I do go, no deer in the freezer yet.

I did manage one pig that netted me 65lbs of sausage, and I was recently gifted two does that are in ice right now.

Got in the stand yesterday about 2 o’clock this little guy walked by me about 3:30 and I shot him. I thought it was a doe I wouldn’t have shot him if I knew it was a button buck. I just really wanted some meat to do some jerky with and was a little trigger happy. My red dot mount came loose and I didn’t realize it until I was looking over the gun trying to figure out how missed 4 inches low and 6 inches left. The side in the pics is the exit hole. I really like these Barnes 110gr bullets. He ran about 25 feet and expired even with a poor shot placement 99133BF9-D412-41E3-B9BE-5239FE11C57E.jpeg

he'll make goooood jerky!!!

Do you cape yours down the middle of the back?

Yep. Unless I am getting a shoulder mount which isn't likely to happen any more in my lifetime. I like doing the skull mounts myself too much to ever go back to paying the taxidermist for anything.

I started cleaning them "gutless" on the tailgate several years ago. The only thing I lack getting that way is the heart and the ribs.

But, I can do one start to finish in under 10 minutes like this morning. I get both shoulders, both hams, both backstraps, the inner "sweet-meats" and the neck roast.

So I loose a little meat for the sake of speed. But we generally try to put away between 20-30 every year. Fail a lot of years, but that is what canning is for. I think we as a family have put away 8 so far this year. And 27 squirrels. And one goat. We're not there yet but we're working on it. Off to a good start anyway.

Ive never got to do a shoulder mount, I’m skull mounting my sons and mine bucks from this year. We Never had to money to shoulder mount one growing up so it has never been that big of a deal. The wife is cool with them going up in the living room so maybe the next good one will get a nice mount.
We are trying to put away around 100lbs+ of sausage between deer and the pigs we had slaughtered. 120 pounds+ of deer hamburger and 70 pounds+ of solid cuts. That just for our family of 5, but that will get us a full year

@thrillhill, not doubting you on the 10 min job, but would it be possible to post some pics, or video, sometime on how you do it? The best I am able to do is about an hour per deer, to skin, remove shoulders, back straps, tenderloins and hams. I hang them by the back legs and typically will not "gut" them, unless someone is wanting the ribs, backbone or organs. I'm getting arthritis in my hands and have started using a hide puller to help pull the skin since I don't have the grip strength.

The 2 I got Saturday, I cut up and gave to my Hmong friend and it took about 2 hours. They use the ribs and backbones in stews. The only things I didn't save for them were the head, hide, legs and pelvis. They didn't want any organs this time. He wants me to save squirrels whole. He removes the hair and cooks the skin also.

Mine takes 20ish minutes. I also hang by back legs. If you aren’t saving hide it’s fast. My secret was to debone the hams as they hang and leave the skeleton in tact to support the deer. I do shoulders, back straps, hams, tenderloin. No gutting.

Let me see if I can video the next daytime kill. If not we can TRY a picture tutorial.

In that case you will really like this method. There is NO pulling to be done. The skin sloughs right off.

Will my phone take a 10-15 minute video? It's a Note-9.

If not I can just show one half of the process. Then you just flip and repeat.

How do upload video to here? Do I need to make a Youtube account? What are my options there? Anybody know about this stuff?

Maybe @amnesia or @BurnedOutGeek or @RR ?

Isn't there a CFF YouTube channel, of sorts?

I'm headed back to my stand in a little while and my cousin who owns the property is wanting a lot more deer killed. They eat up a lot of the corn and beans that are planted. He used to get depredation permits from the state, but hasn't gotten any in several years.

So, to help him out with thinning the herd, would anyone here on the forum like some meat? I skin and quarter them up and would be willing to share with anyone who could use some. The meat will NOT be cut up and wrapped ready for the freezer, just raw, refrigerated quarters. I'm in Concord, and if anyone is interested, send me a PM and I'll let you know when I have some more. (Would need to bring a cooler or some other container(s) to transport it in.)

No BOS, DL, CHP or PPP needed!

This is a great organization for situations like that.

Took my elderly father In law and oldest boy up to the Wilkes property this morning. I was in a small one person blind overlooking a bottom that has been active with both bucks and does about 830 a parade of does crossed the bottom in front of me, but it was too thick for a shot. I texted my son to tell him they were working the bottom toward him. That turned out to be wrong. They walked straight toward me from my left. The biggest one was behind a sapling oriented straight at me at 25 yds. Bobbing her head up and down trying to figure me out. The second biggest was 10 yards farther giving me a nice view of shoulder/neck junction. So I put a 200 grain hard cast through it and dropped her.

Then several things happened at once. The third doe that I knew was there bolted in one direction while the fourth that I never saw bolted in another. And the one I shot disappeared entirely. The biggest one stepped out for a split second and gave me a nice broadside while my brain was trying to process who went where and where's the deer I shot (at?) So I missed an opportunity on a double as she got her act together before I did. Once she bolted I sat there trying to figure out if I missed the shot entirely. When all of a sudden a small poplar sapling started shaking. I looked closer and she'd dropped on the other side of a little hump and was kicking that sapling in her death throes.

Pretty good sized doe. Broke in the G40. I've had worse days.PXL_20211120_140206706.jpgPXL_20211120_135204008.jpgPXL_20211120_135207823.MP.jpgPXL_20211120_145945938.jpgPXL_20211120_161000218.jpgPXL_20211120_164223670.jpgPXL_20211120_165915544.jpg

Did you do a gangsta side aim? If not, minus -5 for cool points, LOL

I took this guy out of the gene pool on Saturday. He was a big bodied buck but his rack was not right.
He is the first buck I’ve taken off the farm since I moved in here this year.
