Show your harvest 2021 edition

My morning hunt was a bust. I had one small doe meander around for about 10 minutes, then eased off to the bramble.

On the way back home, I spotted antlers in a ditch. Dad was following me and knew exactly why I was turning the Tacoma around.

I remembered seeing a car on the side of the road and a truck with its lights on in that same spot this morning, so I figured the car hit it (as evidenced by Chrysler 300 pieces everywhere) and the truck was there to help out. Well, it looks like he helped out by putting the poor buck out of his misery.

He had a fairly decent rack and being as cold as it was last night and morning, I figured the meat might be okay. Well, okay to supplement our dog's regular food.

No one is getting her tender vittles.

In process...

Remi gets the antlers, meat, and leg bones. Lucky dog.

I went back this afternoon and scored a 100lb doe. Unfortunately, the 123gr 6.5 Grendel destroyed an insane amount of meat. You would have thought she was made of liberal bicep.

Guess I need to go back to neck shots.

I purchased a grendal ar package from @Tim and it’s my sons first hunting rifle, that 4 point he shot with it was 120 yards out and the 123gr hst projectiles turned the heart into shreds and jellied a lung. It is an impressive little round

I got a 6.5 Grendel AR upper from @Tim, if I'm not mistaken. It's on a lower, but I'm yet to sight it in.

This was with a Ruger American and I do believe I am shooting Hornady SST 123gr through a Specwar 7.62.

The pig I shot the other week, I shot in the top of her head. When I was deboning her, I found several of the vertebrae in her neck shattered.

Nice!

@kcult , yup, I've tried to fall in love with the Grendel, but it just hasn't taken. I'm actually trying that whole "man with 1 gun" thing instead of just talking about it.

I have thought long and hard about having one pistol and one rifle, and right now that is almost the case. Picked up a quality ar10 and it is what I have hunted with all season, stays by the bed side for home defense, it is my go to rifle. But I think I am going to branch out a little more

Glad to see everyone having successful years. I bagged a 4 point last weekend, this weekend has been a bust so far.

Oh yeah. Handi rifle has been a meat getter.

Suppressor saved the hunt too. I went this morning after working all night. I was tired and a bit blurry eyed. Didn’t notice the deer colored tree until I pulled the trigger. First shot hit the tree. The suppressor kept him from spooking as much. He went down the ridge and circled back. Got a better shot the second time.

Here is one from earlier in the season that I missed posting. My 8 year old with his first. Killed on youth day in Sept with a CVA scout .300BLK with a vortex 1.75-5x32. Barnes black tip and no tracking.

It's not a youth stock per se, but it fits him OK. It is a handy little package and I'll probably hunt a good bit with it myself when he's not along lol. And Thanks.

What's the ammo? I'm sure it's not Gemtech, is it?

Edit: Nevermind. Actually just read the description. Lol

I am in love with it. I imagine it doesn't kick and that's perfect for the kids. Thank you for sharing very nice set up. I am gonna be looking for one now. Does it have threaded barrel on end too.

It does have a threaded barrel. It has very negligible recoil. And it takes down with no tools to pack size.

I've not got into the suppressor game yet but I need to.

This would be a perfect way to get into it. 😎

This mornings deer hunt interrupted by squirrel killing.
#31 and 32 for the season.

For years, decades really, I've given them a pass on the corn during deer season. No more. Been carrying 2 guns to the stand this year.

Sometimes I still see/kill deer after shooting squirrels. Sometimes I don't.

Guess I'm gonna have to learn about suppressors.

With my suppressed 22 pistol and subsonic ammo I shot a squirrel off the corn about 25 yards away while also watching deer less than 150 yards away and the deer never spooked.

Not in stock but they have a notify button. Grabagun is GTG. I've bought several from them.

Shot this little 6pt last night that was missing a baseball size chunk of meat from his neck. He was quartering towards me and my bullet entered behind right shoulder and exited back left ribs as seen when gutting/skinning. He must have been shot yesterday morning because I didn't hear any shots in the evening. I looked for blood for about 20min and never found any, but the deer was dead within 40 yards from where he was standing when I shot.

Hoping the meat will be fine

Bill, do y’all get fox squirrels up that way? We have a bunch of them down here but I don’t know anybody that hunts them. Just curious if they were fit to eat. Size-wise I’d think you’d get a bit more meat?

Nope. Every once in a blue moon somebody will report seeing one. Way more down where you are at. But even then I think the bag limit is one per day. But yeah, good eating.

I've only seen one fox squirrel (and a possible second one) alive in NC.

The first was in Holly Shelters game lands about 10 years ago. No mistaking it. He was huge.

The possible second one was a few weeks ago on my property in Wilkes Co. I only caught a brief glimpse before it was gone but it was bigger than any grey squirrel I've ever seen.

Growing up I hunted the hills of middle and eastern TN quite a bit with my dad and uncles. My uncle John, who served in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam (and spent a year as a POW there) would kill one every time we went hunting. I think that old man could smell them.

But yeah they're good eating.

First sit of the year for me. I have a new freezer to fill (hopefully). Now to decide if I see something to shoot, what to shoot it with.

While I know the answer should be “both”, are you thinking about suppressing the squirrel gun? Or the deer?

And is it already threaded?

This is a great organization for situations like that.
I'm back up in the mountains for a couple of days and shot another one just after we got here. I called the Alleghany Meat Center, which is on the hunter for the hungry list, and was going to take it to them, but they want them gutted and skinned, or they will skin them for $30.

If I'm going to do all that, I'll put it my freezer. It is quartered up in my big cooler now.

@Burt Gummer, if you don't get anything and want some meat, hollar at me.

As I'm sitting here looking at the forum another unicorn comes out to eat my corn. There are 5 or 6 young bucks with one antler broken off. When we turned into the driveway, I noticed one of my reflectors was down. Looked and right beside the driveway one of the unicorns got hit by a car in is in the ditch. I'm seeing more bucks than does.

I need to get one for a .22lr first. Then figure out the rest. Not sure what host I wanna use for the .22. But it's gonna need to be a rifle.

I've shot other folks suppressed firearms. Casually. But this will be my first. I have a lot of questions. Maybe I should read some threads before starting one of my own.

I built a charger with a Gear Head Works tailhook. My stamp for the suppressor should be here any day. Just waiting. Dead Air Mask 22HD. My first can. I’m excited! Lookout squirrels!!!

I did something stupid tonight. I accepted four deer. Dropped them off at the processor and picked up two that I had dropped off the other week.

It's stupid, because every dang freezer I own is full. I do not have room for four more deer.

Guess I need to go out this weekend and buy another freezer.

Does anyone have one they want to get rid of? Hmm?

I'll store some for ya. I have room in my freezer.

Problem not solved, but helped a little.

Craigslist score, and the owner is a past WERA racer and a shooter. I invited him to check out the forum.

How the heck y'all got all that daylight left?

I can only kill bucks after, uh, I mean, I only see bucks within legal shooting times.

Take Elliott with you. They love her.....until they meet her. 😆 🤣
