So I’ve been on and off rucking the tobacco trail. I usually do about 6 miles with a pack, water bladder and 20 lb plate. Not too bad since it is a very flat walk. Anyone else interested in starting a CFF rucking group? Maybe a monthly ruck to start. Keep it simple and build up new members. I’d be up for some reasonable travel outside the triangle too. Heck, I’d drag a small group to W. jeff for a weekend. Who’s in?

There's a big ruck group in Durham (Hope Valley Ruck Club), and I think in Raleigh, too. I know F3 hosts multiple ruck-centric workouts and events in the triangle.

I trade off between my vest (20#) and my ruck (about 35-40#), but given that I am in north Durham it's hard for me to make many events too far out from me.

Hmmmm, Diavolo is right off tobacco trail, is about 6 miles, and if you stick enough discs into a pack it will weight 20lbs.

Coincidence??

Your in luck!!
1 each 12 pk of Red oak amber lager and ice actually weighs the exact same as the Air assault packing list. May be coincidence...but I like to think it was planned that way.
Let's go ruck!!

I ruck tool bags, vacuum pumps, reclaim machines up, refrigerant tanks, etc.. To change a rooftop compressor is about 300 pounds of stuff to the roof. Hell no I’m not purposely adding weight to sack to walk around as entertainment. Get you a fat chick to frolic with. Jeez.

I checked out some of the local groups, but not sure they are a good fit for me. Thought maybe a small group of like minded, gun-toting CFFers would be more my speed.

The one in Durham does different events...long, slow, fast, short and everything in between.

If I had the time to get to the ATT in a reasonable way, I'd definitely be down for it.

Have you looked into Battle Buddies aka American Pioneer Corps? I recall seeing posts about local rucks on Arfcom over the past year.

I was thinking we could move it around and go to different places in the area. I don’t mind a little drive. I just use the Tobacco Trail now because it’s 5 minutes from my house. But if we met once a month as a group we could go anywhere within reason. Umpstead is nice too. I’m sure there are lots of good places I don’t even know about. I’d just avoid urban areas and concrete. Woods and nature seem to make it a little more enjoyable.

Depending on timing I could be down for something like this. We could ruck the cross country trail at Duke, goes around the golf course.... Eno River State Park... the trails at Duke Forest....

Just a couple thoughts...

1. Jewish girls are fun.
2. Rucking is better with beer breaks.

My large ALICE pack will hold a cooler with ice.

I am trying to be healthy here. You’re not helping. But I don’t see anything wrong with a post ruck meal and adult beverage or three.

Interested. Have to get some kind of real pack though. South Durham, a couple miles from the Trail. What are the correct cheap, used functional rucks?

I know nothing about correct. IMO this can be pretty casual. Throw a pack on and put whatever the heck you want in it. No rules. I’ve got a pack with a 20 lb plate and a water bladder. If you are 25 year’s old and built like Paul Bunyan feel free to carry 100 lbs.

I snagged a Kelty Redwing 50 several years ago for a song and it has been great for general hiking and rucking with weight plates in it. It has an internal frame which helps a LOT with the load distribution. I recall seeing a good deal on here for a slightly smaller gently used Redwing 32......

EDIT: It took me awhile to remember where I go my weight plate from:

You are my people😂😂😂😂

50L pack is HUGE for recreational/fitness rucking. Generally 16L-25L is the size you want; or, about 900-1,600 cubic inches. 31 liter packs are OK, but a lot of dead space.

You can wrap standard bricks in duct tape for weight, throw a kettlebell in, weight plates. Ruck plates at Rogue, Goruck, Titan, or Amazon. You can also use a sand 'pill' or a sandbag.

@Fred , if you want to spend the dough, Goruck, the Gregory UM21 SPEAR patrol pack (ebay), or go to ebay and look for '3-day packs' or 'assault pack.' Most are variations on a theme and will be fine. Brands are London Bridge Trading, Eagle Industries, Blackhawk (cheaper, less well made), Tactical Tailor, Paraclete, Mystery Ranch... ebay will have some used ones, cheaper.

@Chuckman @CZfool68 I don't have a pack with a frame or weight supporting belt, just school backpack sorts of packs and weight bench sorts of weights. Is that enough for 20 lbs or so? Is there a way to keep the weight from sagging down and out in the bottom of the pack?

School packs are tough because they usually don't carry that concentrated weight without ripping somewhere. Goruck packs have a built-in sleeve for plates. I'd recommend for a school-type pack instead of a weight with so much density get six regular paving bricks, and duct tape three of them together. That way you could toss one or both in, they fill the space, and it's less dense. For a rucking backpack you don't need a frame, and most people don't wear it long enough to merit a belt. Bricks will 'fill the space,' a weight like a dumbell weight will indeed sink to the bottom and sag in one spot.

I have wrapped towels around weights and stuffed a pack that way. Or you could just fill it up with water bottles. Or so e type of bag filled with sand maybe. Have any heavy shooting bags?

I’m thinking one Saturday AM in August. I’m wide open. Let’s have @Chuckman provide the address or meeting spot in /durham he suggested and try to pick a t date and time that’s good for all/most of us. Or if people want some time to do some baby rucks on their own we could schedule it for the weekend after Labor Day or something.

OR, if you want me to be a dictator I can pick a day and time and whoever shows, shows?

How about August 14th at 8am at @Chuckman Durham location? That gives us all a month to get broke in and it’s early enough if it’s a scorcher we can be done before we melt.

I was thinking a couple hour ruck that doesn’t crush anyone for the first outing. I’ve been doing 6 miles once a week, but it’s all flat. I’m sure we’ll have varying degrees of strength and fitness. Let’s be nice to the old guys. Like me. 😬

So who’s in for Saturday AM? @Chuckman you in for an Eno ruck? If so let us know where to meet. I can meet up in Durham or meet people at my typical Tobacco Trail spot.

@Fred if we don’t have any Durham interest I’ll send you info on my normal spot and we can do a flat ruck and just wing the distance and time. i usually do about 6 miles. Maybe 1.5 hours or so.

I can do an hour or so, about 7:30, before the heat of the day and my prolific to-do list piles any higher.

@CZfool68 , how about the Duke cross country trail? Ups and downs, loops around the Duke Golf Course, parking right off 15-501. Some decent hills, also a pull-up bar near the trail entry if so inclined.

Pull up. You are funny.

That sounds good to me. Can you post an address so we can punch it in Waze? I am not very knowledgeable about Durham. I can drive to Southpoint and back, but that’s as far as I go.

Coming north on 15-501, take exit 107, at bottom turn right. Go to second stoplight (Science Drive, Duke football stadium on left, Washington Duke Inn on right), turn right, then right again into trailhead parking. Less than a mile off 15-501. Easy peasy.

I also have a 35#-ish steel plate if someone wants to use it....

Or a 20# PC if someone wants to wear that instead of a ruck. Or they can wear my ruck (with about 35# of taped paver bricks) and I will wear the PC.

LOL. Heard. What if I bring a resistance band for assist?

Maybe better to bring a body builder. I have not even done a real curl or row type motion with any substantial weight since blowing out my biceps tendon. Just bands and 10 lb dumbbells. Pretty sure my fat ass hanging from a bar would cause much pain and anguish.

I am kidding. I am not going to make anyone do pulls.

There is, incidentally, a 1/4 mile circuit trail attached to the cross country trail. We can/cannot do it. We can feel it out in the morning.

Well we had the first, small, but good CFF rucking group meet. @Chuckman , @Fred and myself met in Durham for roughly a 3 mile ruck. Nice initial test to make sure none of us died. We’ll try to schedule a 2nd meet sometime in September. No special gear or abilities needed. Just the desire to get outdoors and sweat a little bit. Thanks @Chuckman for leading the first meet.
