Triangle Rucking Group?

So as not to be shamed by the younger, smaller whipper snapper named @Fred I ordered a heavier plate for my rucksack. Gotta step up my old man game. Although I’m still not climbing ropes after a ruck. “A man’s got to know his limitations.”

@Fred was climbing that rope like a spider monkey....

Yeah, I’m kinda wondering about him. He’s got that Peter Parker thing going on. More than meets the eye huh? Closet ninja maybe? I’ll have to go shooting with him. If he knocks out that center of a target at 50 yards we’ll have our answer.

My 30 lb plate came today. Shit be heavy. Or maybe I’m weak? I am going to try to get out and at least do a short stroll with it Saturday AM. Maybe about 3 miles to see how it goes.

@CZfool68 How large is the plate pocket in the pack you use?

I have a 12x20 steel target plate around 28 lbs and I'd like to use it for rucking.

The plate pocket in the Go Ruck pack is designed to work with their ruck plates. So it probably wouldn’t hold anything else.

Did my normal Tobacco Trail route of about 6 miles today with the 30 lb plate. Yep, it’s a good 50% heavier than the 20 lb plate. I can now verify that. Legs don’t feel to bad, but the additional weight was felt more around my neck and traps. Or what traps I actually have. Was thankfully on the trail at 6:30 so heat was no issue and it is flat. Had it been hot and hilly I would have been an unhappy camper.

It's amazing what a 10 lb difference can make. Good for you for getting after it!

@Fred the width of your plate would probably make it, but it is really long. My pack has a sleeve that could probably accommodate it, and I imagine some others could as well, but you need to do some research.

Heading up to the mountains next weekend for about a week. I’ll bring the pack, but probably just use the 20 lb plate. Not sure I need to haul the heavy one up the hills all week. I’ll probably be cutting and hauling some wood too so no need to kill myself.

Up in the mountains this week. Did my first hike with no pack to get used to the hills again. Just finished my 2nd weighted ruck this week. Gotta get in shape to keep up with the young guys.

Last little bump before the final stretch

Thanks.
Where should I start with the research?

Well it sounds like Chuck is out for a September ruck, but I am game for something in the next few weeks if anyone else wants to join in. @Fred you want to get together for a packed stroll? We could probably do a Jordan Lake trail. Or Tobacco Trail, or even Umstead.

@CZfool68 Let's do somewhere much less busy than Duke. I can do almost any time, so whatever works for you two.

Maybe this Sunday. If you know the Jordan Lake trails that sounds good. I just need to make sure I have no kid/family duties. I’ll let you know in a day or two.

@Fred , I have come into a Goruck ruck I am willing to sell (GR Eco, 16 liters). I'll make you a deal. If you are interested shoot me a PM.

I have a 20 lb and a 30 lb plate that fits it. I usually use the 20 so I could bring the 30 Sunday for @Fred to use. Or I could man up and use the 30 and let him use the 20. Either way. I love the plates but they are $$.

My kids bought me a Goruck and one each 10 and 20 pound plates. We are training for a trip to the Bob Marshall next summer. I am far from the Triangle, but I am keeping tabs on this thread in case one of my weekends off works with one of your rucks. Would be fun to do it with forum brothers.

When chuckman is all healed up and ready to roll we will do a West Jefferson weekend up in the mountains. Maybe we cam meet up then. And if we can find a good spot in between I am fine having a gathering/ruck somewhere between Hickory and here. More the merrier.

Sounds awesome!

"The Bob" is no joke. That's serious back-country, high-elevation, cougars-and-bears.

Yep. I tell my kids to dream big. He did. Our toughest trips to date have been in the Smokies and they are no joke. The trails we are looking at in The Bob have a lot less up and down than what we've done in the Smokies, but at higher elevation with some serious ups in places.

When are you going?

The plan is to go next July or August. That is still up in the air depending on how school schedules look for one of them, who may be taking summer classes at college.

Early on in the shutdowns last year, I was dropping weight like mad and making great progress. That has since stalled and I've got to get my butt in gear. I need to lose at least my pack weight, preferably more.

A big mistake people make is they assume that at that time of year It won't be cold. It can be cold, especially the nights. Make sure you pack adequately. There's still snow in May and June.

Definitely get in shape. The lower elevations are not horrible, but once you get north of around 8,000 ft, it gets tough.

Yeah, we have been studying temp data. We are trying to avoid snow in the upper elevations, hence waiting until July or early August. Still, temps can get down into the 30s at times, from what we have seen. Will definitely be interesting and different from anything we have done previously. Will also be nice to go somewhere where we probably won't get rained on every day. That has been the biggest challenge of the Smokies. Everything is always wet, no matter how hard we try to stay dry.

Just seeing this thread somehow. Would love to meet up for some rucks. I’d have to get either my Osprey or Kifaru pack out of storage and can probably load it up with 20ish pounds of camping gear. Tagging so I can keep up with future meets/rucks.

Ok, @Fred and whoever else wants to join how’s the New Hope Overlook Trail at Jordan Lake sound for Sunday? It isn’t going to be very hot so any time in the AM is fine with me. Maybe 9?

I can make that. I didn't realize there's a fee to park there now, and my Google Earth intelligence shows a booth to get in and a gate at the other entrance. I wasn't trying to drag people into a paid park. If there's somewhere better to go, let me know.

It used to be the gate was left open and unattended after Labor Day Weekend. Not sure if that is still the case. Umpstead is an alternative if that is better. I usually go to the entrance down the road from Bass Pro Shops. I am good with either place.

We can do Umstead and do Jordan next month when it is free.

9 am in the lot down the road from Bass Pro. I haven’t been there in a while, but they used to have maps there so we can figure out what trail to do.

Anyone else that wants to join let us know. Shoot me a PM and we can exchange cell #’s.

@Fred and I hit Umstead this morning. Too many family’s and dogs even at 9 am but still a decent workout. We did 5-6 miles of some small ups and downs. Probably a good place when the weather goes to crap and the family’s stay home.

Does that say 80 pounds?
