Did You Go Shooting Today

Merry Christmas, CD, nice hats on you boys! Keep your heads down, though, and be safe!

50 rounds thru the trusty 66-1. Week 51 of this journey. Conclusion of the session?

Thank goodness for the WM ammo blowout. Now it costs me much less to make no progress.

Ran out to the the Sig 1911-22 for reliability. The Colt/Walther had zero problems and the Sig after 5 magazines started having problems with bullets flying out of the magazine. Next up was the Ruger 10/22 to make sure the TureGlo Red dot was still zeroed in. Had to make a few adjustments. Need to get a better red dot.

Then to the 100 yard range to see if the Savage Axis II 6.5 CM with a Sig Whiskey 3 scope would like a little bit hotter bullet (Hornady 140 ELD) over 40.5 gns of H4350. These are right at 2,650 ft/sec, about 50 ft/sec above my normal reload point. The way I figured it, the best grouping (3 shot) was .357" and the worst grouping (5 shot) was .700". When looking at the target, the first grouping is the center, then bottom right, top right, bottom left and top left. Please correct me if I am wrong on the size of the grouping.

Went yesterday with the wife and her Dad. He hasn't been to the range much since the early 70s when he was in the Navy. Never shot an AR15 pistol or many handguns. We fixed that situation real quick and I'm trying to get him into a CHP class.

He reallllllly liked the fireball from the 7.5" 5.56 pistol, and the Leupold glass on my 18" AR.

I went today and shot the 1911s. (Yay!)

Tried the 5X5 Drill, no timer and not exactly as specified in another thread, but just to see if I could hit the circles at 5 yards in about 5 seconds. I did sometimes and didn't other times.

At 5 yards, even I can see those big circles!! Thank goodness.
Targets will be in the "show me your targets, people" later today.

Shot about 140 rounds of 9mm and 50 of .45, so it was an awesome 1911 day, regardless of where the rounds actually hit.
PS: No malfunctions with the RIA today, though it's spraying black stuff all over my hands. The Springfield keeps plugging along like always, just awesome to shoot!

Did a quick trip today to play around with the CZ 527 in 204 Ruger and 223. The 204 was dead on from the get go. The 223 was a different game. I have a Burris Fulfield scope on the gun and anybody that know that scope knows that there is no set screws to lock down the dial on the turret. Could not hit $hit at 200 yards. Decided to shoot at a broken clay on the berm at 200 yards. I thought the gun was zeroed at 100 yards and the dope was 2.1 up. To be able to hit the clay I had to go negative to 11.5 of 17 from Zero. If my math is correct I was shooting 2.6 MOA over the target at 200 yards. No wonder I never saw the impact on the berm.

I’ve been a very bad boy. Violated my covenant of fidelity and shot a friend’s three pistols today. Three rounds, two and two respectively.

To make up for it, I ran 80ish rounds thru the 66-1.

Just got back from PHA. Rolled through 250 rounds way too fast. Dang 33 round happy sticks in the Micro Roni dispenses them too quickly. I think I may have ran about 30 total through the G48, and the rest through the Roni. That thing is FUNNNN.

Yep. My son and I took one of the ministers from our church who also has a son in the same grade at school. I’ve invited him multiple times through the years and it finally worked out today.

We went to PHA in the light rain and set up in one of the pistol bays to shoot steel. He brought a SR9C that he said he’s only put ~50 rounds through, a Mark II I sold him a couple years ago, and a little .25 (Tomcat? not sure but it’s in the pic).

I bought:
Glock 23
Glock 21
Rossi 22LR 6” revolver
Rossi .357 Magnum snubby
Suppressed 7” 9mm SBR
Suppressed 4.5” 9mm AR pistol
Suppressed 4.5” 15-22

He’d never shot a revolver of any kind. His son had shot a 22 rifle and some kind of shotgun at an FCA camp. Neither had ever shot suppressed. Everybody had a great time.

We kept this one all rimfire and pistol calibers and rang a lot of steel. The plan is to go back on Wednesday and hopefully get a tactical pit to ourselves. We’ll shoot a bunch of rifles that day.

GREAT job BigWaylon!

While in Texas I shot many rounds through my Great Western and Model 10. That really reminded me just how much I enjoy shooting a revolver. Today, I carried my Model 36 and used it to shoot the 5/5/5 drills from pocket concealment. I was satisfied with my results and I don't think I could have done any better with am autoloader.

The guy I buy my steel from charges $154 delivered. But, that’s the plate only so you have to add the value of all the stuff that came with your package.

Jeppo, are you using 3/8 AR500 steel? If so, what distance are you shooting 223? The instructions say the impact needs to below 2.850 ft/sec not to dent the steel.

I bought this mainly got AR pistols in 300 BO and 9 MM. I am guessing at 50 yards I would not need to worry about splash back. Most rounds would be leaving the gun below 1,100 ft/sec.
For pistol use, do you think 25 yards would be OK with 38 and 9 mm rounds?
It would be a bitch to have to carry this pass 50 yards. Our 100 yard and meter ranges you have to walk to the berm. The 500 will let you take the SxS.

Yes, only 3/8” AR500 for me. I’ve never shot my steel with an AR and can’t get back far enough to feel safe doing so. I’ve bought some frangible ammo and might give that a try. It was actually @Zbizzle911 that got me searching for those rounds and I believe he’s been happy using them.

For pistols, I’ve read that the minimum safe distance is 11 yards but the steel MUST be angled WAY down toward the ground (I believe they talk about 20 some degrees minimum). I’ve shot thousands of rounds at my various plates from 11 yards and back. Once in a very rare occasion, something does come back. I’d never shoot it without eye protection and nothing had ever hit me hard enough to hurt or draw blood (yet?????).

We’ve shot plenty of .38, .45 and 9mm at my plates. I think maybe @Have gun-will travel was shooting .41 at it and not sure all the different ammo @MacEntyre has aimed at my plates. Anybody who’s shot other calibers at my steel can jump in. Come to think of it, I think @BU2scwMJL was shooting some .357 here recently.

357Sig, a 125gr 9mm bullet like the one you found on the ground in perfect form, but it damn sure moves the plates around like they're nothing.

Dont forget I've shot the KSG at your range but I managed to not destroy it by only hitting the soda cans :D

Went to Frontline today, mainly to chrono some 45acp test loads. For that, I did not even bother to setup a target, I just shot at the berm. Once that was done, I went over the the steel side and did some semi-rapid fire, 12 yards, with my Witness steel 45, and Witness poly 40. Then I did the same with my M&P 40 with the CAA micro conversion attached. Ringing steel is satisfying!

After hearing about the church shooting that was stopped by a good guy with a gun, I decided I need to practice more with my EDC (Sig 938). I just don't shoot it as often as I should. So, I did some accuracy testing - slow fire head shots. Then I did some semi-rapid fire. In all, I ran about 50 rounds through it. I think I will try to shoot at least 50 rounds through it every time I go to the range. I may even move out to 25 yards just so I know what my limitations are.

If I did not have to work tonight, would have been at FLD.
Spent an hour at TSA in Raleigh, 9mm and .22 therapy all at five yds.
M&P 9mm, Beretta Nano and Neos 6" Inox

It was slow at FLD today. One other guy on the pistol range, and one guy at the 100 yard rifle. Before I left, I had a nice long conversation with the elderly guy at the pistol range.

I too have the place to myself most of the time unless Paul is working the range, I'm overdue for FLD time.;)
I have a few rifles I need to sight in and also spend some time on the 1,000yd.
My wife thinks the're going to find my body after the bears and vultures are finished with me.

50ish rounds of .38 thru the 66-1 today. The spring kit and thousands of rounds thru this gun have given it an amazing DA trigger. Tomorrow we find out whether the year-long DA revolver journey has meant anything. o_O

Went Monday
Took a Canadian girl to the range, she loved it!
In Canada they have hunting rifles, that's it. She's never TOUCHED a gun before.
I started her with a Glock 17
Then a Kimber Micro9
And then, one she really thought was cool because of movies like Die Hard - the HK sbr.
Then a few rounds with the AR15, 2 rounds 'standard' and then I put the suppressor on there and she thought it was really cool.

But her favorite was the 10/22 takedown ruger, she loved plinking!

Just got done with @karalynnlippy and @Gnash.Hyena at DPRC, oh what a wonderful day it was! Great temperature, great weather! We shot rifles: RDB, Aero X-15 in 6.5 Grendel (I think I'm in love,) FAL, and DD M4V7 and handguns: Glock 34, 19M, Sig P365 and Nash had his AR9 as well. What a great way to start the nee year!

Figured out how to load and fire my carry gun (VP9SK) after more than a year. The conclusion is I probably need another year with the revolver. :(

Since it was the 1st, I declared it "first guns on the first" day and brought out the first gun I ever bought (and the first gun purchased by a friend of mine that I got from him before he passed).

My first: Glock G23
His first: Ruger P85

I haven't fired my G23 in a long time. Other than the recoil, it's just another Glock. Did feel weird with the finger groves missing. It's almost a gen 5! :) Full disclosure, I did not have any steel case 40 ammo, and I could only find 1 box of brass 180gr in the big box of random ammo. Me. Shooting BRASS ammo. What a strange way to start the year.

The p85... man what a clunky, clumsy, slow, rattly thing.... that was surprisingly fun and easy to shoot. The sights are tiny, but the trigger is very nice (both DS and SA modes) and being so heavy and with such a huge slide to move around recoil is very tame. Also, the mags load super easy with the included loader. It's a valid plinker, but I would not want to have to carry it around. Oh, and that dumb ass lanyard loop? Don't try to seat a mag in a hurry or you're sure to bury that thing in the palm of your hand.

A friend call me on Thursday and asked if I wanted to go to the range on Friday. He is a member of the same range that I am but he has not been there in months so I said OK. Range toys were 3 AR pistols (300 BO suppressed, 9 MM and 223) and the 1911-22.

All ARs ran great and was very careful to make sure the 223 and 300 BO found the right guns. I had some 300 BO loaded at 1,840 FT/Sec and 1,000 FT/sec. Want to see how much of a difference there was and you can differently tell the difference but I would be fine shooting both without ear protection.
The 1911-22 I ran some loads that were 1300 FT/sec and 1000 FT/sec. The 1000 FT/sec did not cycle the slide every time. Not sure if I would buy them again.
