Motorcycle love

At some point in the life of my FLHP I may decide to "de-cop" it more than it is now. Part of that would include taking off the black headlight nacelle and handlebar clamp cover and replacing it all with chrome (if I can stand the price, because as it is now I can only find the parts from HD and they are quite proud of them), and painting the black side covers to match the bike.

Here’s a question. Did you just drill the clamp cover to bolt the tach to it?

When I bought the police tach it came with the black clamp cover and mounting bracket. I used the already drilled black clamp cover to measure by and drilled my original chrome cover.

I covered the chrome cover in blue painters tape so it would be easier to mark and center punch the hole locations. From what I remember the bolt heads on the underside of the clamp cover were pretty close to the handlebars, if you went too far one way or the other there could be some interference. I think I used button head bolts to give me a little more room. The nuts on the top side are the same as what's used on the windshield mounting bracket.

I appreciate it brother, but Zack was the fellow who answered on Saturday after I submitted requests on Thurs and Friday.

Then I got a text from Landon asking why I didn't get a quote and he would be glad to earn my business. I told him the models and said, you give me a good deal and I will ride down and write you a check for two of them. Texted him at 11:48am today and asked where we stood; he said he was getting the quote together and was just going to call me. I got the 4:45 and finally just texted him and said that TCM must be doing really good that they don't need my money. He came back and said, "I told you I would be right with you, and I have 2 customers buying vehicles now"... that pissed me off as he told me he was free and was working on the quote. I get it, that customers in hand is worth more than a potential sale from a quote... but damn.. "take my money, please" was literally my tone.

So I sent Rob (GM) a reply to his email this morning, where he told me that someone would definitely call today. I told him that my money must not be good there, aa request for quotes over 5 days and can't get someone to want to knock this out; that TCM evidently is not in a rush to sell.

Appreciate the inside scoop, but I made it clear that if they priced a fair deal, i would take two... except I never got someone to call. I just don't have time to deal with that BS.

Now I have a call into my shop in Virginia where I used to buy my motocross bikes; if they offer a fair deal, I will just pick them up next time I am headed back from PA.

I bought 3 biikes from TCM... there will not be a 4th.
That really sucks. I'd be boycotting too with that experience.
Luckily my Aprilia is the first bike I've bought from them (next door at their "Tee's Euro Cycles"). Couldn't have been any easier. Just had a great experience with their service today too. No appointment, took the bike in right away, wrapped up ahead of schedule and even welded a broken aftermarket skid plate bracket they noticed without charging extra.

Installed Paradise Lights LEDs all the way around. See and be seen.

And the horn on the latest pig is dang near deafening.

I want to see those the next time we meet.
Pittsboro tomorrow.

They work better in hard bags that don’t have liners in them, like I put in yours.

Ah.. it all worked out as the fellers at Full Throttle hooked me up with double rebate on the KLR. I will be taking her out tomorrow with the Wikes crew around Brushy Mountain. Man it is a big son of gun... but sometimes a little patience and things will work out.

Kelly and I rolled out on the 1300 today, and logged about 70 miles. Not a big ride, but fun nonetheless. Got the new flush mount signals in and mounted up for the Grom. Hopefully taking out the 900RR tomorrow.

I knew this would happen. If I paid the dealer to go ahead and install heated grips while they had the bike, I knew I would end up changing the bars.

I have to do everything at least twice. It’s like one of the laws of thermodynamics in my garage or something.

Just ordered different handlebars, and wiring extensions. At least I don’t have to change the brake or clutch lines and cables.

You probably won't need wire extension but better to have and not need!

KST says you don’t have to change clutch/ brake lines for 12” or less. 12” was tight on my ‘20 Street Glide.

12” was fine on my ‘22 Road Glide.

Rerouting was involved in both.

Wiring extensions were used in both.

We’ll see.

Dealer is a rip off and CAN bikes are much simpler than the pre CAN wiring.
Ft. Bragg HD wants six hours labor for bars 12” or less. At average shop time of, say, $120 an hour (some less, some more), I figured I’ve paid myself $3,600 for five installs.

I know where to go if I want a new set of bars...

Thrashin seems to be doing good business, I've been watching their vlogs.

ive been happy with their parts, pricey but high quality
I'm very happy with what fielgrade installed on the road glide. Floor boards, brake peddle, highway pegs and shift lever. Nice stuff. Ill probably buy the mini boards for the wife eventually.

The shift levers are HD, but those shift pegs are Thrashin. The foot brake lever is Softbrake offset by 1” and lowered, since I put 3/4” spacers on the footboard brackets.

You set it up nicely

I put an Amazon police style tour pak on yesterday. I’m normally a fan of HD’s painted parts because they are just quality. The hardware, the durability, the finish and matching paint, and I could buy one made by HD for $1500. In only black, or white, (that likely won’t match the bike).

Ridiculous, right? I thought so, too.

XMT Moto (or any number of other Chinese knock offs on Amazon? $137.

I ordered an HD lock set that is keyed to my bike, for a whopping $31. The Chinseum lock set that came with the pak was simply terrible, barely works, doesn’t latch securely, where-as the HD lock works as advertised, and secures the lid snugly against the weather strip, with a matching key to the bike. I did utilize a Hogworks mounting plate that improves the installation in lining up where to drill the bottom of the pak. That alone was worth the $50, plus the plate is counter-sunk and comes with quality mounting fasterners. Real pleased with that.

But wait, there’s more!

The sun comes blazing through the transom lights in my garage door late in the afternoon, and lo and behold, my black trunk has blue metal flake in the paint. LOL. Glad I didn’t have to pay extra for that. 🤣 Never mind the dust.

After your first couple of trips, report back on the Chinese tour pack please

Traveling tall did a review of the Amazon tour pack on his YouTube channel...he is a down to earth guy. I am a fan of the Pelican case route myself....you can find them used on flebay for decent prices.

I’ve bought two Harley tour paks, including mounting racks, lights, both one-year-only colors. I am a fan.

I have followed lots of discussion on the Amazon tour paks. For your application, with a passenger leaning on the backrest against the tour pak, you would definitely want to get the Hogworkz mounting plate. Worth the $50. And a Harley lock, because the locks that come with them are terrible.

You can get it in any color you want, as long as that’s black. I have bought XMT Moto fairing lowers and was surprised at the quality for $100. They pack them for shipment better than Harley. Likewise with this trunk I just got from XMT moto.

You can save some money with Hogworkz or Advanblack to get it painted Reef Blue, but you won’t get it in that two tone with pinstripe on your bike, like the chopped pak on it now.
